Homeland security is focused on preventing, protecting, and responding to natural and man-made disasters and attacks on the homeland.

What academic program is WAU offering?
The WAU Homeland Security Program offers the following three certificates: Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Response, Cyber Security, and Homeland Security.

How does the program fit with the university’s mission?
Consistent with WAU’s mission, this program seeks to increase students’ understanding of the needs of their local communities and equip them with education, training, and skills to be moral leaders and of service in disasters. The curriculum will allow students to seize opportunities in the nation’s capital for learning and enlarge the “perceived university campus” to allow them to benefit from the university’s remarkable location.

What is unique about the WAU academic offering in emergency preparedness?
The WAU Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Response Certificate will offer the faith-based community a curriculum focused on service that employs ethical and Biblical principles in disaster preparedness and response. The curriculum, with its emphasis on mass causalities and community health, builds on WAU’s related emergency responders/health care offerings in radiology, respiratory care, and nursing. Those WAU programs provide experienced faculty, related courses, and foundational knowledge that help inform this new program. The Seventh-day Adventist denomination also has a long-standing history of responding to emergencies and disasters. The certificate builds on our denomination’s disaster response expertise, knowledge, and mission as a Church. Therefore, WAU is uniquely experienced as a Seventh Day Adventist and faith-based institution to integrate security and public safety issues with an understanding for service.

What is unique about WAU academic offering in cyber security?
The Cyber Security Certificate builds and expands WAU’s long-standing academic offerings in computer science and information systems. This new certificate aligns with WAU’s mission and continues the tradition of quality academic programs.

What is unique about WAU academic offering in homeland security?
Taught from the perspective of a faith tradition, Washington Adventist University will help prepare students to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals dedicated to protecting the U.S. Using principles for peace-building, conflict resolution, and an ethical framework to meet homeland security objectives, it will train “competent and moral leaders.”

How long is the certificate program?
It is a six month program, the fastest program in the area. Students will take two courses every eight weeks. Each class meets once a week for three hours.
