Spiritual Master Plan

The Washington Adventist University Spiritual Master Plan has been prepared by the Office of Ministry under the direction of the Strategic Planning Committee of the University as the North Star of spiritual programs on campus. Goals and objectives to achieving the desired outcomes have been clearly defined.

Objectives and Plans

Washington Adventist University students upon graduation will demonstrate spiritual competencies in the following areas:

The current organizational structure of the Ministry Department is comprised of Campus Ministries, Community Services and Missions.

 

Goals and Objectives

I. Washington Adventist University will facilitate a life and church-changing dialogue, centered on Adventism, spiritual development(formation) and love in action.

1. Being intentional in identifying the true Source of all wisdom and knowledge, Jesus Christ, which is the foundation of Seventh-day Adventist education, in contrast to other competing sources, i.e. secularism, that vye for our attention with the intent of supplanting Christ from the ultimate place of sanctity; our inner self or life:

1.1.1 This is accomplished in a collaborative approach by the responsibilities and methodologies utilized by the didactic and the life-community participants (faculty, staff, and administration) in our interactions with the students and each other.

1.1.2 The incorporation of the faculty, staff and administrators in the comprehensive ministry programs/plan as participants and teachers in the co-curricular spiritual development(formation) and disciplines classes and religious programs, including mission trips.

1.1.3 Provide co-curricular classes that investigate and compare various religious faiths, persuasions with the intention of helping the students to accept and/or secure their foundation in Christ as the one who shapes, interprets our worldview as the author and finisher of our faith.

1.1.4 The pastoral resources, WGTS radio station chaplain, the Religion Department faculty, and Sligo Church pastoral staff will provide the individual and group spiritual counseling sessions as requested and needed by students.

1.1.5 A weekly class for group sessions will be planned and provided for as needed by the university community.
1.1.6 Tailored session times will be structured to meet the various needs of the multi-faceted population, i.e. Graduate and evening students.

1.1.7 Specific sessions or chapels for student groups who have special scheduling requirements, i.e. nursing students weekly chapel/convocation sessions.

1.2 Intentionally design the weekly Chapel/Convocation service where the presence of God is encountered and experienced.

1.2.1 The chapel programs are designed with the specific annual theme, program objectives that the Office of Vice-President for Ministry has established and communicated to the designated speakers/presenters for each program.

1.2.2 A diversity (gender, race, culture) of speakers have been selected for the academic year. They also include workers from the various organizational structures within the region, i.e. GC, NAD, Columbia Union, as well as the various local conferences that comprise the Columbia Union Conference, and Washington Adventist University faculty and staff.

1.2.3 The monthly chapel themes are in tandem with the annual theme and are synchronized with the co-curricular classes on spiritual (development)formations and comparative religions.

1.2.4 A new chapel format to meet the various needs of the learning community designed as follows:

Week 1 – Speaker
Week 2 – Music, Drama and Testimony
Week 3 – Keeping it Real
Week 4 – Chapel4U

1.3 Help create a spiritual environment through Spirit-inspired art and framed quotations throughout the campus. This will help direct the campus attention via the arts to the Source of all wisdom, knowledge and love by the ministry of inspired art and language.

1.3.1 Office of Vice-President for Ministry will purchase and place spirit-inspired artwork, quotations and other artifacts in strategic locations (high student/staff traffic areas) throughout the campus. The intent is to draw their minds and attention towards the annual theme.

1.3.2 Begin the process for the acquisition of a campus centered sculptor that reflects our mission and commitment to service.

1.4 Weekly Friday Night Services: the development and implementation of the weekly service that is intentional and thematically synchronized with the annual theme and focuses on the elements of praise, worship, adoration, prayer and proclamation.

1.4.1 Each praise service has a theme that is synchronized with the annual theme.

1.4.2 A diversity of area SDA churches' ministry and praise teams are participants in our Friday Night services, which helps to establish a connection with the campus community.

1.4.3 A variety of program formats will be used that targets the goal of the Yearly Theme.

1.4.4 The implementation of a new drama ministry that provides a different medium in communicating the Gospel message of Jesus Christ to the students.

1.4.5 Friday Night offers two options for students/faculty/staff

o Reflections – Friday Night Vespers
7:30pm – 8:30pm
o Singspiration – Praise and Worship Service
8:45pm – 9:45pm

1.5 Logos: the weekly Sabbath School Class program in the ladies residence hall.

1.5.1 The continuation of this program encourages our students to participate in the Sabbath School program.

1.5.2 A simultaneous objective is to investigate having a collegiate age Sabbath School class at Sligo Church, which could alleviate the need for a separate class in the residence hall.

1.6 Bible Study classes: the continuation of the weekly bible study classes that will lead to students and other community participants in connecting with God.

1.7 The Prayer Gathering: encourage our students to participate in this weekly prayer meeting service at Sligo Church.

1.8 The continuation of the Week In Spiritual Emphasis (WISE) program.

1.8.1 This program occurs twice a year. The fall and spring sessions are conducted by the Office of Vice-President for Ministry and the Student Association, respectively.

1.8.2 The programs are thematically connected to the annual theme for the year.

1.9 The creation and implementation of a "Prayer Warriors" ministry that will engage in the power of intercessory prayer for the learning community.

1.9.1 Establish a prayer request ministry and request boxes that are strategically located throughout the campus.

1.9.2 The Prayer Warriors will be active in preparation of and during all religious and spiritual services. They will be soliciting the power and presence of God's Spirit.

1.9.3 Again, the Prayer Warriors intended goal is to pray that the community will be sensitive, open, and receptive to being connected to God, who shapes our worldview and provides the criteria for defining, interpreting, and understanding reality.

1.9.4 Set aside payer rooms in the Residence Halls.

1.10 Meet with the Spiritual Life Committee to review/critique the Spiritual Master Plan and evaluate the ministry blueprint monthly.

1.11 Meet with the Sligo Church pastoral staff weekly to review the Spiritual Master Plan along with the ministry plan for adaptations, updates and revisions.

1.12 Meet with the President, President's Cabinet and the Faculty to report, review, and critique and adjust the Spiritual Master Plan along with the weekly ministry plans monthly.

1.13 Student Surveys: continue to survey the students twice a year; at the beginning and end of the academic year. The data will be invaluable as we ascertain the range of effectiveness of the service and ministries to the students. Additionally, it will solicit the students' suggestions and opinions.

1.14 Meet with Office of Ministry staff weekly to review, critique and adjust the Spiritual Master Plan and evaluate the ministry blueprint weekly. Constant revisions to the University's spiritual program

1.18 As needed Office of Ministries coordinates a discussion of the Spiritual Assessment Reports with the Spiritual Life Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, President's Cabinet, and Student Life Subcommittee of the Board of Trustees, and the Board of Trustees. Adjustments are made to the Spiritual Master Plan as needed and action steps are developed to help achieve the goals of the plan.

II. Essential Connections: Yearly Themes

1. Develop, implement, and conduct weekly co-curricular classes on the Spiritual Disciplines.

1.1 Lesson plans for the primary disciplines will be developed, along with the designated presenters, i.e. Sligo Church pastors, area SDA church pastors, WAU faculty, and the Religion department faculty:

1.1.1 Identity – Who am I
1.1.2 Bible Studies
1.1.3 Evangelism
1.1.4 Leadership
1.1.5 Discipleship

2. Conduct spiritual and leadership retreats for students, student campus ministry leaders and other WAU faculty, staff members who wish to participate.

3. Develop, implement and conduct the "Apprentice to Jesus" workshops and classes that provide additional "ways and means" for students and community participants to establish and maintain a connection with Jesus. This is a co-curricula class.

4. Synchronizing and incorporating the ministry and outreach of Sligo Church with the university community in providing service and ministry opportunities that will further augment the students' capacity in connecting with God and simultaneously building a sense of corporate community between the university students/campus and the Sligo Church congregation.

5. Establishing a (daily) time for students (and others) to pause for the Power of Prayer, or a Prayer Pause. This is a new initiative for incorporating the relevancy and power of prayer to the campus.
Ensure that prayer rooms are known to campus.

6.1 The Office of Vice-President for Ministry will establish a central location, i.e. water tower for this gathering (lasting 10-15 minutes) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Fridays, to share, pray, and reflect.

6. Publish a weekly "Ministry @ WAU" every Friday for the ensuing week.

7.1 This communiqué will be circulated by the various informational mediums.

7.2 Every spiritual program, event, activity for the week, along with the presenter/speaker as well as the theme and topics will be listed so that the entire community is aware of what's coming.

7. The ministry programs and events will appear in the weekly Sligo Church bulletin and other eSligo mediums, as far as possible and area churches.

III. Service: Living the Love of God:

The University will provide a variety of vehicles for involving students in service and mission programs.

1. Service Days: the continuation of the annual service days during the fall and spring semesters where students, faculty, staff and the administration participate in providing service to the community. All classes and university offices are to be canceled and closed as every member of the academic community participates in the program.

2. Project Sonshine: the weekly and bi-weekly ministry program to residents of the various Nursing Home facilities throughout the area by our students.

3. Short-term mission trips: the development of two short-term mission trips by students to serve in various projects around the world every year.

4. Long-term mission trips: the resuscitation of the mission programs and service engagements by our students.

4.1 The objective is to revive the program where we have four to six student missionaries serving in different parts of the world each year.

4.2 The theme for our missions program is, "Impacting Lives, Changing Communities"

4.3 The student missions' emphasis will work in collaboration with the Office of Volunteer Services of the North American Division.

5. Joint outreach ministry programs in collaboration with Sligo Church, as well as with the area Seventh-day Adventist churches.

5.1 The objective is to identify ministry projects of other Adventist churches and partner with them especially if there's a need for additional human resources. This provides additional service opportunities for our students and staff.

5.2 Establish stronger ties in collaborative ministries with the Center for Metropolitan Ministries.

6. Create ministry and worship exchange programs between the University students/Office of Vice-President for Ministry and the area Seventh-day Adventist churches.

6.1 This can help establish and strengthen our organizational relationship with the various entities in the region.

6.2 In collaboration with the Enrollment Services and Athletics departments, sponsor University trips to various churches and SDA academies throughout the Union territory that can fulfill a student recruitment, marketing and ministry objective for the University.

IV. Productivity: Bearing Fruit:

1. The last stage in this spiritual formation continuum is what Jesus described as "bearing fruit." This was the distinguishing element that separated the good soil from the wayside, stony and thorny soils. Bearing fruit, or productivity can and will take the following manifestations:

1.1 Transformed lives as evidenced by a higher and continuous commitment to Jesus,

1.2 Higher number of students participating in the student missions and service projects for humanity,

1.3 Baptisms, students will be challenged, encouraged and assisted to take a stand for Jesus Christ.

1.4 Higher number of participants engaged in Bible Studies, as well as the number of students (and others) who are giving and sharing the studies and the Gospel message with others,

1.5 Increased attendance at the voluntary worship and praise services and co-curricular classes,

1.6 Increased productivity by faculty, staff, and administration,

1.7 Enhanced and noticeable aura of Christian civility throughout the campus wide community,

1.8 A strengthened symbiotic relationship between the University and the Sligo Church where we emulate what was proclaimed about the early churches demeanor and disposition; they were of "one heart and one mind."

Conclusion
.

Lastly, this Spiritual Master Plan will continue to evolve as we process, analyze, synthesize, experiment and pray for God's empowerment and guidance.

At the end of their academic journey on the campus of Washington Adventist University students should be able to say, my life has been touched by the life giver Jesus Christ, and now I can go out and impact the world with His love thus transforming people's lives.
As for the faculty and staff they will always say, the best days of my life were spent guiding young people to the cross of Calvary.
