ron warren

Ron Warren is considered one of the most versatile and dynamic performers in the country today. He has the ability to honor the past while moving Native American music into the future. Dr. Warren has performed with many artists in many venues, including The Kennedy Center, South Street Seaport, the National Museum of the American Indian, Nationals Park in D.C. for the Pope’s visit, Native American festivals, world music and flute festivals, as well as other festivals across the country. His work has received multiple Native American Music Award nominations, an Individual Artist Award from his home State of Maryland and has been heard on NPR, Pacifica Radio, Canadian Broadcast Corporation and numerous other media outlets. An International Online Music Magazine review said of his CD, Dancing the Full Moon, “some things in life are absolutely essential and this is absolutely one of them.” Equally at home in classical music settings, Ron has been a soloist with the Old Bridge Orchestra, playing his own work, “White Oak Canyon” and with the Minot Symphony Orchestra, performing Philip Glass’s “2nd Piano Concerto” along with pianist, Paul Barnes, for whom the piece was written.

Dr. Warren’s doctoral training provided him with the foundation to create new works that exhibit the contemporary side of Native American songwriting. He has written compositions for voice and Native American flute in both classical and world music settings, arranged various traditional songs for the flute, composed the majority of the music on his recordings, and orchestrated other compositions for various choirs and orchestras.

Dr. Warren has been an educator for many years. From teaching composition and music theory to college students to educating younger students about Native American music and culture, Dr. Warren has made learning fun and engaging. His work has been supported by the American Composers Forum, First Nations Composer Initiative, Meet the Composer, the Maryland State Arts Council, and numerous performing arts organizations throughout the United States and Europe. Ron’s educational background includes a DMA in Music Composition from the University of Maryland where he held a three-year Doctoral Research Fellowship and received the C. Henry Smith Prize for Composition. His Master of Music degree is from Bowling Green State University and his Bachelor of Arts in Music, Composition emphasis, is from Bluffton University (Ohio). Ron currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, MD, where he teaches the upper division theory/composition sequence. He also regularly teaches World Music at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD and provides workshops, cultural programs and master classes in schools, colleges, and other venues nationwide.
