The Washington Adventist University’s Athletic Department is proud to boast of their 13 great sports programs that encourage its student-athletes to be physically active and play to their utmost potential as they compete around the country in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the United States Collegiate Athletic Associate all while putting Christ first in their lives and being an example on and off the field. Under the supportive eyes of University President Weymouth Spence and the direction of Athletic Director Bruce Peifer the department has baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track & field, men’s and women’s volleyball as well as a renown gymnastics performance squad known as the Acro-Airs. Each squad has its own bragging rights and looks to continue to improve as they bring in and graduate students from every background.
WAU Unveils New Logo & Website

Takoma Park, MD (Jan. 30) – Washington Adventist University Athletics Department is excited to announce the unveiling of its new logo and website.

In partnership with an internet consulting service, SIDHelp, the new website provides fans with updated features that the current site does not have. Features of the new site include: direct access to WAU Athletics’ Facebook page and Twitter feed, photo galleries of WAU sporting events, and improved schedule and roster pages. Be sure to follow WAU Athletics on those platforms for social media promotions, along with links to scores and results.

In addition, the WAU Athletics Department has unveiled a redesigned logo to represent the university’s 13 sports teams. The new brand identity will be used on uniforms, promotional materials, and athletic communications. The licensing process is under way and the use of the marks will begin immediately. The Athletics Department worked with Logomagic to come up with the new design. Logomagic is a highly-respected company that has designed the official logos and marks for a number colleges, universities, professional sports teams, and companies. Comeback effort falls short in 63-51 defeat against Apprentice School

Takoma Park, MD (Jan. 25) – The Washington Adventist women’s basketball team faced off against the Apprentice School Wednesday evening, after trailing by double digits at halftime the Lady Shock mounted a comeback but the Lady Builders held on for the 63-51 victory.

After taking an early 5-2 lead the Lady Builders went on a 10-4 run and WAU would fall behind 15-5. The Apprentice School’s lead would extend to 15 with 3:44 remaining in the first half. The Lady Builders continued to keep a double digit lead with a layup by Andrea Wilson, the Lady Shock would go into the locker room down 27-14.

In the second half, the Lady Builders would increase their lead to 57-32 with 5:06 left in the game. Even though the Lady Shock were down they mounted a comeback with 3:07 left in the contest. WAU would go on a 14-2 run that was sparked by a 3-pointer from Blair Thompson, however time would run out and the Lady Builders would go on to the twelve point victory.

Margaret Douglas led all scorers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Quianna Tiggle had 11 points and three rebounds. Angelica Nevarez added 10 points and Andrea Wilson contributed 6 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Courtney Collins had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Denise Hamilton had 11 points and six rebounds. Jasmine Pringle added 10 points and Danita Whitaker contributed 7 points and five rebounds for the Apprentice School.

WAU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when the Lady Shock play host to Salem International. The tip-off is schedule for 6:30pm in The Pitt.

WAU Men Lose Heart Breaker At Home

Shock lose 59-57 at home against Philadelphia University

Takoma Park, MD (Jan. 19) – Philadelphia University Rams guard Corey Francisco dropped in a lay-up with two seconds left to lift his team past the Shock 59-57, Thursday at The Pitt.

The start the game was close but by the end of the first half the Rams would take a ten point lead with 1:19 left before the break. The Shock would come back with a couple easy baskets and on a dunk by Marcus Coleman the lead at the half would be cut to five, 30-25.

The second had the Shock would pick up the pressure on the Rams defensively and with 9:05 on the clock a Jamie Newton free throw would knot the score at 40-40. For the next few minutes both teams would exchange three-pointers, and Newton would visit the charity strip again to give WAU their largest lead of the game 51-45. The Rams remained persistent and a three-point basket by Jim Connolly would give them back the lead, but Newton scored a layup to tie the game for the sixth time at 55-55. The last minute of the game both teams would trade baskets and with 14 seconds left in the contest the score was tied again at 57-57. After a Rams timeout Francisco drove down the right lane to hit a layup to end the game.

Jamie Newton led the Shock with 18 points and seven assists. Marcus Coleman had a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds. Brandon Washington added 8 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. WAU went 13-for-21 (61.9%) from the free throw line and out-rebounded Philadelphia 46-35.

Corey Francisco led the Rams with 18 points and four rebounds. Jim Connolly had 15 points and three rebounds. Temi Adebayo added 11 points and five rebounds, and Nick Schlitzer contributed 10 points and nine rebounds. Philadelphia shot 23-of-57 (40.4%) for the game while WAU was 21-for-61 (34.4%) from the field.

WAU hits the road again when they travel to NC to face Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, Jan. 24 in the C.E. Gaines Center at 7pm.

Third CIAA opponent defeats WAU 100-84

WAU vs. WSSU

Winston-Salem, NC (Jan. 24) – Washington Adventist held a one-point lead at the half over Winston-Salem State, but the Rams outscored the Shock by 17 points in the second period as they battled back and came away with a 100-84 win over Washington Adventist Tuesday night at the C.E. Gaines Center.

Brandon Washington led the Shock with a team-leading 18 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Jamie Newton chipped in 16 points and went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe.

The Shock were up by one point at the half, but the Rams went on a 26-16 run in the second period to take an 11-point lead, 66-55, with 12:28 left in the game. WAU used a couple of baskets to reduce the home team’s advantage and a layup by Washington cut the Ram’s lead to seven points, but that is the closest they would come.

WAU finished the game with 14 assists and went 22-for-27 (81.5%) from the free throw line. The Shock were 32 percent from the 3-point arc to the Rams 21.4 percent. Antonio Ortega had 12 points and five rebounds, and went 3-5 from 3-point land. Marcus Coleman added 11 points and five rebounds, also Darary Hill contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

Justin Glover led WSSU with 17 points and Joseph Thompson had 16 points and five rebounds. Tyre Desmore and Wykevin Bazemore both contributed 13 points and Bazemore collected 12 rebounds.

WAU will return home to face Salem International University on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 8pm.

WAU lose to Philadelphia University 83-54

WAU vs. PHILADELPHIA

Takoma Park, MD (Jan. 19) – The WAU women’s basketball team returned home after a nine-game road stint and lose to Philadelphia University 83-54 Thursday evening.

The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 11 point lead and never looked back. The Lady Shock fought hard but could not close the gap. Turnovers by WAU and offensive rebounds prove to be the difference in the game. Philadelphia scored 24 points off of turnovers and converted 42 of their points in the paint.

Senior Rebecca Lee had a season high 14 points and three rebounds. Quianna Tiggle had nine points and Angelica Nevarez had eight points. Margaret Douglas added 8 points and five rebounds for the Lady Shock.

Christine Wooding led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Blye also had a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor Peltzer added 23 points and four rebounds for the Lady Rams.

Philadelphia shot 29-of-63 (46%) from the field and went 7-of-17 (41.2) behind the three point arc. The Lady Shock were out-rebounded 43-38 and committed 24 turnovers.

Up next for the Lady Shock are the Lady Builders of the Apprentice School on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in The Pitt. Tip is scheduled for 6:30pm.
