The Mentorship Experience at Washington Adventist University aims to create an on-going atmosphere of learning, growth, and lasting community for WAU students. The mentoring relationship is designed to provide students with a) an opportunity for professional development and networking; b) support as they transition into a new learning environment; and c) encouragement for academic and personal growth.
The mentee experience exposes the student to an expanded view of WAU and is an introduction to positive role models who have had similar experiences. Through friendship and guidance, mentees develop a personal and professional relationship that enhances their strides toward successful and productive experience at WAU and beyond. Becoming a mentor provides an opportunity for concerned individuals to put their own vision, energy and creativity to work, making an important difference in a WAU student's life. Mentors can benefit from the personal satisfaction of contributing to a student's growth and success. They can also enjoy the stimulation and challenge of inspiring, encouraging and supporting their mentees, thereby contributing to their professional and personal development. Each fall, students and mentors are matched based on their profiles (see below). Two orientations will be held at the beginning of each semester: one for new mentors, and one for new mentees. Each orientation will cover several topics designed to share tools for both the mentor and the mentee to gain the most out of The Mentorship Experience.
It is highly recommended that mentors and mentees meet face-to-face at least twice a month throughout each semester. Regular, consistent connecting helps cultivate the mentorship relationship, as well as offers students a chance to develop their support-network as they navigate the college experience. Mentors are asked to complete a Progress Form at the end of each get-together; this information will help us help YOU enhance and maintain this experience for both you and your mentee. The program concludes in April with the Mentor Appreciation Banquet.
Both mentees and mentors will be asked to complete two electronic evaluation forms during the year (one per semester). Your observations will help us continue to improve the program. In addition, program staff will provide assistance and a solution if a relationship does not click, as well as offer ongoing support.
