Veterans – Student Responsibility and Information

Student Responsibility – It is the responsibility of the student to contact the VA Certifying Officer each semester immediately upon registering for classes to ensure that the courses in which they are registered are eligible for certification. In addition, the VA Certifying Officer will send an email to the student ‘advising the student of actions the student is required to take.  If no response is received within 7 calendar days, the student will be certified for the eligible courses in which they are registered at the time of certification.  In cases where another form of response is required, no certification will be done until all required forms or deficiencies are met.  By law, all institutions have until 30 days after classes begin to certify a student’s enrollment for VA benefits.

Concurrent Registration – If a student intends to register at WAU and another college or university simultaneously, the student must first notify the WAU certifying official.

Notification of student class load to the VA – After the last day to register and drop courses for each semester/term, the certifying officer will notify the VA of the class load for which each veteran is registered. A copy of the certification will be sent to the student.

Readmission of Veterans – The University is required to readmit students who left in order to join the military’s. The student must be readmitted in the same academic status. Generally, the length of absence can not be greater than five (5) years. Exceptions to this law include those veterans receiving dishonorable discharge, or bad conduct charge, or those who were court marshaled.

GI Bill® Delayed Payment Policy – The university complies with the GI Bill Delayed Payment Policy. For any student using Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill or Chapter 31 VocRehab Benefits, the university will not prevent enrolling, assess a late penalty fee, require securing alternative or additional funding or deny access to any school resources that are available to other students that have paid even if the VA has not yet paid tuition and fees.
