Faith, Wellness, and the Call to Rest: Observing Stress Awareness Month
Written by: Dr. LaVonne Brown
April is National Stress Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the importance of mental and emotional well-being. Whether you’re a student, faculty member, or staff, the pressures of daily life can often feel overwhelming. In the hustle of academic deadlines, work responsibilities, and personal commitments, it’s essential to find balance and nurturing practices that help manage stress. Faith plays a central role in coping with stress, offering strength, perspective, and peace in times of uncertainty.
The Bible offers many verses that encourage us to trust in God, seek His peace, and cast our anxieties on Him. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This promise of peace is not just spiritual but also practical—it can be a foundation for stress management, providing us with tools to cope with life’s challenges
For students, faculty, and staff, the act of grounding yourself in faith can be an effective way to handle stress. Here are a few practical tips for managing stress during this busy time:
- Start your day with quiet time. Whether it’s reading scripture, journaling, or silent prayer, a grounded morning sets the tone for the rest of the day.
- Set realistic expectations. Perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Be kind to yourself and others as you move through deadlines and responsibilities.
- Prioritize sleep and nutrition. Rest and healthy eating aren’t luxuries—they’re necessities, especially during exam season.
- Breathe and move. Short walks, stretching, or deep breathing exercises can break up mental fatigue and renew focus.
- Stay connected. Sharing your worries with a friend, mentor, or spiritual advisor can lighten the emotional load.
- Rest in God’s presence. When your to-do list feels overwhelming, remind yourself that you are not alone—and that rest is holy.
