Hangers of Hope Brings Generosity, Community and Support to WAU Students

TAKOMA PARK, MD. — A new initiative at Washington Adventist University is turning clothing donations into something much larger: an opportunity to strengthen community, support students and demonstrate the University’s commitment to service.
Hangers of Hope, created in Halcyon Hall, provides students with convenient access to clothing, professional attire, personal items and other essentials. The initiative was developed in recognition that college students may sometimes find themselves in need of these resources and should have a welcoming, judgment-free place where they can receive support.
At the heart of Hangers of Hope is a simple idea: A small act of generosity can make a meaningful difference in a student’s college experience.
The initiative provides more than clothing. By creating an environment centered on generosity, community and connection, Hangers of Hope reminds students that they are part of a university community committed to supporting their well-being and success.
Organizers envision Hangers of Hope eventually growing beyond its beginnings as a residence hall initiative to become a resource serving the broader WAU community. The long-term goal is to establish a sustainable cycle of giving through which gently used clothing and other needed items can be donated, redistributed and made available to students who can benefit from them.
Future possibilities also include expanding the types of resources available and developing partnerships with departments and student organizations across the University.
Another important part of the vision is creating stronger connections between current WAU students and alumni.
Alumni can support Hangers of Hope by donating gently used professional clothing, accessories and other useful items. Such contributions would allow former students to make a direct and practical investment in the lives of students currently living and learning at WAU.
The initiative also creates an opportunity to strengthen the connection between generations of WAU students and demonstrate that membership in the WAU community does not end at graduation. Future alumni engagement could include donation drives, sponsorships and other opportunities to support the program and its students.
Hangers of Hope reflects values that have long been central to the Washington Adventist University experience, service, community, generosity and helping others succeed.
More than simply a place to give or receive clothing, Hangers of Hope represents a community caring for its own and ensuring that students know they are supported as they pursue their education and prepare for their futures.
Through each donated jacket, professional outfit, accessory or essential item, Hangers of Hope demonstrates that generosity does not have to be extraordinary to have an extraordinary impact.
