Inspiring Stories of Success: WAU Nursing Students Awarded Lucy Byard Scholarships

TAKOMA PARK, MD — The Nursing Department at Washington Adventist University (WAU) gives hope, and instills pride in regional and global communities. Recently, the department achieved a significant milestone with the award of the Lucy Byard Scholarship. From a highly competitive pool of applicants, four students received the Lucy Byard award, and two of the four were WAU nursing students.

The Lucy Byard Scholarship, established by Adventist HealthCare, serves as a tribute to Lucy Byard’s legacy and underscores the organization’s commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect. This scholarship program is designed to provide financial support to exceptionally talented nursing students facing economic challenges. It is part of Adventist HealthCare’s broader initiative to address health disparities and economic inequities among people of color, promoting equity in education and preparing students for success in academics, careers, and life.

Junior Philogene, a senior in WAU’s nursing program, expressed his excitement and surprise at receiving this prestigious acknowledgment. Overcoming initial skepticism, he embarked on a journey that included submitting essays and undergoing a personal interview. After rigorous preparation, he was elated to realize that he could complete his college education without incurring loans, enabling him to channel all his energies into his studies and future master’s programs.

Philogene noted that this achievement represents a significant step toward his goal of a stress-free life unburdened by the worries that often plague individuals.

Moving forward, Cameca Anderson’s experience serves as an inspirational story for those facing life’s challenges. Initially doubting her ability to apply for such a substantial scholarship, Anderson found inspiration in Philogene’s story and decided to pursue her dreams. Her intention to support her family and give back to the community set her application apart. Furthermore, her background, marked by an unstable social and economic environment and discrimination due to mental health issues, mirrors the challenges faced by Lucy Byard.

“It definitely propelled me toward my goal of becoming a nurse anesthesiologist. However, its most significant impact has been in motivating me to give back to the community. Based on my personal experiences as a young mother, I hope that individuals of any background, regardless of their financial circumstances or ethnicity, will not be deterred from pursuing higher education,” Anderson shared.

In conclusion, the message sent from WAU is crystal clear: “Regardless of one’s economic status, mental health challenges, or the responsibilities of being a young parent, one’s journey is not over until there is the courage to pursue their dreams.”
