Washington Adventist University Welcomes New Chaplain, Dr. Jiwan Stefan Moon

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) — Washington Adventist University (WAU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jiwan Stefan Moon as the new chaplain. A third-generation pastor and fourth-generation Adventist, Moon brings a wealth of experience in youth and young adult ministry, along with a deep commitment to mission work.

Affectionately known by his mentees as “Dr. J” or “DJ,” Moon is the son of Dr. Young S. Moon and Chul Joo Moon, both educators. His father was the first missionary sent by the Korean Union Conference, instilling in him a missionary spirit that has guided his life and career. With a passion for music, art, traveling, and sports—particularly soccer—he has always been deeply connected to young people. Moon even played as a striker on WAU’s varsity soccer team.

He holds an MA in Youth Ministry and a Doctor of Ministry (DMin) in Youth & Young Adult Ministry, both from Andrews University. His career includes serving as the inaugural Public Campus Ministries (PCM) director for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists from 2014 to 2020.

Moon’s wife, Jessica, is the principal of Dover First Christian School. Together, they have three teenage daughters—Hannah, Rebecca Anna, and Isabella Jinah—whom they consider their most precious treasures and gifts from God.

As the new chaplain, Moon aims to create a safe and spiritually enriching environment for students, faculty, and staff at WAU. His vision includes making the campus a hub of spiritual excellence and missionary zeal, particularly for those aspiring to become future leaders and missionaries.

“Every Student, A Missionary. Every Student, An Ambassador. Every Student, A Servant,” is the motto that will guide Moon’s ministry on campus. Additionally, the WAU Chaplaincy’s motto, “Gateway to Service, Gateway for Mission,” underscores his commitment to fostering a spirit of service and mission among the WAU community.

His favorite quote, which encapsulates his dedication to his calling, is from missionary David Livingstone: “God, send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden on me, only sustain me. And sever any tie in my heart except the tie that binds my heart to Yours.”

As he steps into his new role, WAU looks forward to the positive impact Moon will have on the spiritual life of the campus and the broader community.
