ALUMNI WEEKEND 2024 CELEBRATION MARKS WAU’S 120TH ANNIVERSARY

TAKOMA PARK –  In a jubilant celebration of its 120th anniversary, Washington Adventist University (WAU) welcomed back alumni from across the decades, infusing the campus with a palpable sense of joy, belonging, and nostalgia. From April 5th to 7th, the WAU campus served as a reunion hub, with graduates from the classes of ‘54, ‘64, ‘74, ‘84, ‘94, ‘04, and ‘14 converging to reminisce and reconnect.

A highlight of the weekend was the Alumni Brunch & Information Session, where Dr. Weymouth Spence, president of WAU, unveiled the mini master plan for the hospital lot. This presentation offered attendees valuable insights into the future development of the campus, igniting excitement and anticipation among alumni.

Over $6,000 was raised during the weekend, underscoring the commitment of alumni to support their alma mater’s mission and vision. Additionally, WAU bestowed awards and recognitions upon notable alumni and faculty members, including Ben Johnson, Lloyd Yutuc, Susan Comilang, Bernie Albright, Lee Wisel, Dr. Anthony Futcher, Kathy Hecht, Earl Blackwell, and Ted Lang.

A poignant moment came with the return of former Music Department Chair and guest conductor, Dr. James Bingham, who led both alumni and current choir members during the Sabbath service. The service also featured Dr. Hyveth Wiliams, the first female Director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Seminary SDATS, Andrews University, Michigan

Looking ahead, WAU is committed to enhancing alumni engagement and experience. The university’s research department is developing a survey to gather feedback from attendees, aiming to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Plans include increasing outreach efforts to encourage greater alumni participation in future events, diversifying activities to appeal to a broader audience, and fostering partnerships with associations and community organizations.

Improved communication channels will keep alumni informed about upcoming events, nurturing a sense of community and belonging. WAU remains dedicated to enriching the bond between alumni and the institution, ensuring that alumni weekends continue to bring a renewed breeze of energy and connection to campus life.
