Washington Adventist University Names Dr. Christopher Banks as New Dean of Student Success
TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) — Washington Adventist University (WAU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher Banks as the new Dean of Student Success. A native of Silver Spring, Md., Dr. Banks brings a distinguished academic background and extensive professional experience to his new role, where he will oversee the academic and personal development of WAU students.
Dr. Banks earned his Honors B.A. in International Relations from Brown University, followed by a Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University. He then completed his Ph.D. in Politics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, establishing a strong foundation in global affairs and policy analysis.
His professional career is marked by leadership roles in both educational and governmental sectors. Dr. Banks previously served as the Director of Education and Workforce Development at the Urban League of Portland, Oregon, where he was instrumental in shaping programs that supported education and employment opportunities for underrepresented communities. He also held the position of Director of the International Relations B.A. Program at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he guided students through rigorous academic training in global affairs.
Dr. Banks’s experience extends to significant contributions to U.S. government research, including work on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and on Stabilization Capabilities and Afghan Police Reform at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). His expertise was further utilized in assisting the U.S. Congressional and UN liaison offices of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
In addition to his formal roles, Dr. Banks has engaged in analytical and volunteer work with organizations such as the Washington Institute on Near East Policy and the Corporate Council on Africa, further enhancing his expertise in international relations and policy.
As WAU’s Dean of Student Success, Dr. Banks is committed to fostering an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. His broad experience in education and public service positions him uniquely to support the university’s mission of developing leaders for the global community.
