Washington Adventist University (WAU) has tapped two of its alumni to  return to the campus as chaplains as a part of a reorganization of the Department of Ministry, designed to serve the campus community more effectively, according to Vice President Baraka Muganda. Muganda introduced his two newest hires at General Assembly on May 16, lauding them for personal and professional attributes, which he said persuaded him to hire them.

“They are both outstanding young people,” he said. “We are pleased that they have accepted the call to serve and we are expecting great things from them.”

Students will return to WAU this fall, to find to some well-needed changes to the weight room.  The facility is undergoing a significant makeover, thanks to sponsorship from University-owned radio station, WGTS 91.9. What started as a donation of a few pieces of equipment has resulted in a transformation of a much-used college facility.

Fresh off the press, Procession and Carols: A Christmas Suite for Women’s Chorus and Harp, is a new published work by maestro James Bingham, chair of Washington Adventist University’s Department of Music and director of the Columbia Collegiate Chorale and the elite choir, Pro Musica.  The work describes the story of the enunciation and birth of Christ, through the use of Medieval carols, many of which emphasize the perspective of women.

Nearly 300 graduates symbolic of New Growth Spurt

TAKOMA PARK, MD (April 30)—Slightly under 300 students passed through WAU’s Gateway to service, Sunday, April 29, on their way to demonstrate a special brand of competence and moral leadership to communities across the United States and the world.

Relatives and friends packed Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to witness one of the largest graduating classes in the University’s history. The numbers are symbolic of a growth spurt that WAU has been experiencing in recent years.  The Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Science degrees were conferred on 237 students while graduates degrees in business administration, counseling psychology, professional counseling psychology, health care administration, public administration, nursing education and nursing and business leadership were conferred on 45 students.  Nineteen students received associate of applied science and associate of science degrees.

TAKOMA PARK, MD (April 30) – Washington Adventist University’s mock trial team ended their season with a win against Howard in early April and a draw against  the University of Maryland, April 22.  In a spirited competition against Howard, held in Morrison Hall Chapel, the team walked away with awards for best attorney to Asara Greaves and best witness to Angelica Carrasco.

The Washington Adventist University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was named a Rookie of the Year and first runner-up Region Champion at the USA Regional Competition held April 4, 2012 in Baltimore, Maryland. The event is one of 11 regional Competitions being held across the United States in March and April.

“We started our team six months ago and had so much to accomplish in a short time.  Our team of 20 students worked hard, completing over 1000 hours of volunteer work in our community and on campus,” said Professor Kimberly Pichot, faculty advisor.  “I am very proud of our students accomplishments.”

April event expected to bring hundreds to campus

TAKOMA PARK, MD (March 28) – More than a century of tradition will be on display, April 12-15, when Washington Adventist University hosts its 107^th annual Alumni Weekend.  Hundreds of alumni are expected to visit the campus for the weekend, which will culminate with the Family Fun Festival, starting Sunday at 12 p.m. and ending at 5 p.m. on the WAU Commons.

“This is a much loved WAU tradition,” says Bruce Peifer, Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Affairs. “Our alumni mean so much; we look forward to them coming back, reconnecting with us, sharing their experiences and mentoring current students. We deeply value this annual event, and this year is even more special because of all the growth taking place here.”

Takoma Park Campus Celebrating Historic Growth

Washington Adventist University (WAU) will formally open the first new building on its campus in 40 years on April 14 at 8 p.m.   The Leroy and Lois Peters Music Centre, named for its major private donors, is expected to add enormously to the richness of its fine arts programs at a time when the campus  is experiencing historic growth.

A memorial dedicated to the late Virgina-Gene Rittenhouse, founder of the New England Youth Ensemble will be unveiled at the opening.   Founded 40 years ago, the performing group is a resident orchestra at Carnegie Hall.  Rittenhouse spent 17 years as professor music at WAU.

Washington Adventist University is not only the fastest growing institution among the United States North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists institutions; it is also the fastest growing among the Maryland Independent Colleges and University Association (MICUA).

The Association recorded just over 16 percent growth rate in undergraduate full time equivalents (FTEs) from fall 2010 to fall 2011 for WAU.

The Washington Adventist University Honors Program and the English Department will this month host a series of events dedicated to the study of the British modernist poet and artist, David Jones (1895-1974). Events include an exhibition, a conference, a film screening and poetry reading, beginning March 14 and ending April 20.
