The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has granted reaccreditation of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at Washington Adventist University through June of 2019. The program, which is an off-campus program of Andrews University’s Social Work Program, began in 2003 with five students currently has thirty. Its recent reaccreditation followed more than a year of preparation and included a site visit by CSWE in February.

“Social work education is based on 12 core competencies and more than 70 individual practice behaviors that are infused into our learning activities and field education,” said department chair, John Gavin. “Our partnership with Andrews University to offer an accredited social work program ensures that we are meeting the highest standards in social work education and that students can get licensed and attend graduate school.”

After several months of talks with Washington Adventist University (WAU) to operate a branch campus at Atlantic Union College (AUC), the Board of Trustees for AUC in a meeting on Wednesday, October 5 voted to suspend any further negotiations at this time after the institutions were unable to reach an operating agreement.

The talks with WAU began when AUC was informed by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) that its accreditation would be discontinued for financial reasons.

They say that cleanliness is next to godliness and for the students of Washington Adventist University, Service Day gave them the opportunity to improve the conditions of Takoma Park Recreation Center. Read More>>

The Washington Adventist University Student Association hosted “The September 11 Memorial Concert” in Sligo SDA church on Sunday September 11, 2011.

The concert featured various artists and groups such as Living Springs SDA Choir from Glenn Bernie, MD,  Wendell Phipps; a WAU freshmen who is also a Pre-Engineering major, Michael Patterson; a third year WAU music major, Jidong Zhong from Takoma Academy and Amber Bullock from Saint Louis who is a WAU alum.

Along with the beginning of the 2011-2012 Academic Year comes the traditions and nuances of University life.One such tradition is weekly Convocation, the one campus event that hopes to bring together every student, faculty, and staff member for a spiritual moment of inspiration, remembrance, and prayer. Read More >>

Dr. Virginia-Gene Rittenhouse, Beloved Director and Educator, Dies

Dr. Virginia-Gene Rittenhouse, professor and director of the New England Youth Ensemble at Washington Adventist University passed away early this morning in Massachusetts.

“The Washington Adventist University family is deeply saddened at the passing of a true pioneer in Seventh-day Adventist education. She was a driving innovative force with the orchestra and the programs she began,” says Dr. Weymouth Spence, university president.

WAU held its Summer Commencement ceremony on the night of Thursday, July 28, 2011. The ceremony began at 7:00 pm at Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church and concluded with a welcoming line in the Sligo Church Atrium.      

AUC Students Invited to Enroll at WAU’s Maryland Campus

Current and prospective students from Atlantic Union College (AUC) in South Lancaster, Mass., are being notified of a transition plan that will enable them to attend Washington Adventist University (WAU) at the Takoma Park, Md., campus for the fall 2011 semester.

After signing a memorandum of understanding and obtaining support from constituents of both the Atlantic Union Conference and Columbia Union Conference during the spring, leaders of the university have been working to secure approval from required federal, state, regional and church accrediting agencies for the establishment of a branch campus in South Lancaster, Mass.
