An advocate for educational equity and a Maryland native, Dr. Garifo is the Director of Weis Library. Before joining Washington Adventist University, Dr. Garifo served as a librarian for the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, Prince George’s County Public Schools, and Trinity Washington University. She began her library career as a two-time Junior Fellow at the Library of Congress.
Dr. Garifo’s dissertation research examined the theory of culturally relevant pedagogy within the context of public libraries that serve racially and socioeconomically diverse populations. Her current research interests include expanding her findings to university learning environments, especially in terms of engaging first-generation college students.
