First Convocation of Spring 2021
Written by: Shannon Smith
At 11:15 a.m., on January 13, the second Wednesday of 2021, Washington Adventist University aired their Spring Opening Convocation ceremony to both new and returning faculty, staff, and students. President Weymouth Spence welcomed the attendees, those in person and on the live stream, and thanked those who played a role in the university’s recruitment and admissions process. “This is the place where we – in excellent ways – engage minds and transform lives,” President Spence said. “This is the place where we blend faith and learning to produce graduates who bring competence and moral leadership to their communities throughout the world. In the spirit of community, this is the place where we suspend all routine activities and gather every Wednesday at 11:15 to connect with Father God, our source for every good thing.”
The speaker for the ceremony, WAU Provost Cheryl Kisunzu, shared her message for the 2021 spring semester, “Your 2020 WHY = Your 2021 WALK.” Imploring the attendees to reflect on the question “Why?” highlighted in the year 2020, she encouraged them to gain wisdom and understanding from such insight, gaining a renewed clarity of purpose for the new year, 2021.
“As the early church did in Acts 4:33, ask the Lord to work miracles through your life yet again… and go forth,” Provost Kisunzu said. “And through this intentionality, you will be blessed to be a blessing, and I assure you that you will have a happy, and yes, a prosperous new year.”
Thank you to each of the Spring 2021 Opening Convocation participants and the Music Department performers!
