Who is a First Generation Ambassador student?
A first generation student is one whose parents have not graduated from a two- or four-year college or university.
What is the purpose of this program?
Nearly 40% of the student population at WAU is composed of first generation students. We want to ensure the academic and social needs of our students are met, in order for them to successfully complete college.
Here are the goals of the program:
- Create a bond amongst our students in the program, so that a support system is created as relationships are being developed
- Increase student cultural awareness through community service
- Provide workshops which help students build the necessary skills to prepare for professional objectives (workplace, graduate/professional programs)
- Connect students with faculty and staff, peers, and members of the community, in order to enhance their college experience
- Help students smoothly transition into, and become acclimated to the atmosphere, and culture of WAU
Why should I become a First Generation Ambassador?
Becoming an ambassador is a great opportunity to demonstrate the value you have for your education, while playing an active role in your community.
Beginning in Fall 2012, some of our First Generation Ambassador Program (FGAP) participants will be mentoring first generation high school students, and will be helping them prepare for the college application process.
Other FGAP participants will be volunteering their time at Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (ACS) by:
- Assisting with ESL (English as a Second Language) courses
- Assisting with food and clothing distribution
- Refurbishing computers
- And supporting other literacy programs for the community
Do I have to be a first generation student to participate in the program?
Yes. However, if you are not a first generation student, there will still be opportunities for you to participate in service activities with the group.
How do I apply?
