Acclaimed Composer Stacey Gibbs Holds Choral Clinic at WAU
Takoma Park, MD. (February 13, 2019) The Columbia Collegiate Chorale recently spent an afternoon in a choral clinic with an acclaimed and highly-sought after composer, Stacey V. Gibbs.
Dubbed the new Moses Hogan, Gibbs is famous for rearranging familiar Negro Spirituals and providing them with a unique energy. With over 70 published arrangements, his music has been performed by choirs throughout the world.
“It was a pleasure to have Stacey Gibbs come and work with WAU Choirs because he brings a light-hearted and inspirational vibrancy to the rehearsal setting,” shared Anwar Ottley, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. “His pedagogical application of the Concert Negro Spiritual made this an experience our students will never forget.”
The Chorale focused on their performance applications and spent the time working on two pieces arranged by Gibbs; Way Over in Beulah Land and Deep River which has not yet been published.
The Music Department at Washington Adventist University seeks to provide performance opportunities, as well as an environment for students to cultivate their skills. They look forward to hosting clinics in the future with other composers.
Thrilled for the opportunity to have worked with a legend, the university is in the process of commissioning a piece from him.
