Master of Education in School Counseling Overview

The Master of Education in School Counseling prepares you with the necessary skills to help students in elementary, middle, and high schools gain their full potential academically, emotionally, and socially. With a Master’s in School Counseling, you will obtain counseling techniques focusing on special education, program planning, ethical, legal, and multicultural counseling.

Additional Requirements
-Pass a criminal background check before starting the Practicum.
-Complete five hours of personal counseling at the student’s expense before starting the Practicum.
-Pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) during the last semester of the internship at WAU.

- Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education or social work or a related discipline with a minimum of GPA 2.75 from an accredited college or university. Individuals possessing an unrelated degree must take three upper-division undergraduate psychology, education or social work courses earning a B or better.
- A candidate presenting a GPA between 2.6 and 2.74 must take the GRE psychology subject field and score 150 or higher.
- Two letters of academic and/or professional recommendations are required. The individuals selected to write a recommendation should be able to determine the candidate’s aptitude for graduate study and the ability to work with young people.
- Submit a letter of professional intent that describes the goals, experiences, and individual’s philosophical orientation that allows the admission committee to determine the candidate’s suitability.
- Applicants are required to have a pre-admission interview with the graduate program coordinator.
