TAKOMA PARK, MD. On Aug. 23, 2023, the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) Board Foundation honored the Vice President for Student Life at Washington Adventist University, Dr. Ralph Johnson, as part of their inaugural Gavel and Gravel Society.
SACSA is an independent regional association designed for the professional development of practitioners, educators, and students engaged in student affairs.
In an announcement message last month, the association stated, “The distinguished accolade has been carefully curated to highlight and celebrate the exceptional contributions of professionals who have left an enduring and indelible mark not only on our field but also within the SACSA community.”
President Weymouth Spence called the news a “distinctive accomplishment” and congratulated Dr. Johnson in an email sent to his cabinet members upon receiving the information.
A graduate of the University of Alabama, where he majored in Speech and Language Pathology, Dr. Johnson has held numerous positions in higher education. These include a nine-year tenure at the University of South Carolina as the Assistant Dean of Student Life and Director of Minority Student Affairs, and treasurer of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.
The 2023 Inaugural Class will be recognized during the 2023 SACSA Conference on Nov. 5, 2023, at the Gavel and Gravel Society ceremony.
