Washington Adventist University Unveils New Prayer Room

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) — The Betty Howard Center of Washington Adventist University (WAU) inaugurated its first “Prayer Room” on Wednesday, January 30th, providing a dedicated space for students and faculty to deepen their spiritual connections.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Dr. Spence, President of WAU, and Dr. Paul Graham, the University chaplain, led the event with a prayer, blessing the newly established room.

The concept of creating a space conducive to fostering a deeper connection with God was initiated by Dr. Betty Johnson, Dean of Student Success and Faculty Development. Johnson was inspired by students seeking a quiet sanctuary for reflection on academic and personal matters. Thus, the Prayer Room was born to fulfill this need, offering students, faculty, and staff a place for quiet contemplation.

As a religious institution, WAU remains committed to nurturing the spiritual development of its community. The Prayer Room serves as a vital tool for achieving this goal. Starting from the first week of February 2024, students began utilizing the dedicated space. Due to its limited size and the necessity of maintaining a tranquil atmosphere, entry will be limited to groups of three at most, with scheduled times to prevent conflicts and ensure a positive environment. Emergency access will also be available when immediate need arises.

Dr. Betty Johnson articulated her vision for the room, stating, “I hope this room can be seen as a place where anyone who uses it can feel comfortable, safe, and able to collect their own thoughts. This is our primary objective and one that we will continue to uphold in the semesters and years to come.”

Dr. Graham, in his role as spiritual leader at WAU, expressed his full support for the initiative: “I am grateful to Betty Johnson for spearheading this idea. Many within our community have been anticipating a designated space for prayer. While God is Omnipresent, a dedicated area for prayer aligns with biblical principles, offering students and faculty a serene environment to encounter Jesus at any time.”
