TAKOMA PARK, Md. — In today’s academic landscape, students are increasingly seeking experiences beyond the classroom, and Washington Adventist University (WAU) is committed to supporting them in their endeavors. WAU students exemplify a remarkable ability to balance their academic studies with real-world work experiences. One standout example is Evelin Baralles, a Health Science major at WAU who also serves as an ambulance driver for Stone House Volunteer Fire and Rescue in Virginia.

Despite being only a sophomore at WAU, Baralles has been volunteering for over four years. She maintains a demanding schedule, working every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. before attending classes. This rigorous commitment underscores her dedication to developing skills in the medical field with aspirations of becoming a surgeon.

“For anyone seeking to gain valuable knowledge in the medical field while actively helping others, I highly recommend pursuing courses such as CPR, EMT, paramedic training, firefighting, and hazard safety,” Baralles advised. “Though challenging, stepping out of your comfort zone yields a wealth of experiential learning.”

Baralles expressed gratitude for WAU’s support, noting that the university has been understanding of her demanding schedule. “It’s ultimately about persistence and effective time management,” she explained. “While on call, I strive to utilize downtime for homework, and my professors have been incredibly supportive, offering one-on-one assistance and additional study resources.”

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed by faculty members like Dr. Perez, Chair of the Biology Department, who commended Baralles for her commitment. “We are immensely proud to have motivated students like Evelin,” Dr. Perez remarked. “Her initiative reflects the spirit of WAU students, who demonstrate a remarkable sense of responsibility from an early age. It speaks to the university’s efforts in attracting and nurturing exceptional students.”
