TAKOMA PARK, Md. — At Washington Adventist University (WAU), the international community is vibrant and integral. It draws students from across the globe eager to make a mark in the world. The university prides itself on fostering an environment that is not only welcoming but also deeply committed to its students’ success.
Navigating the complexities of establishing a new life in the U.S. can be daunting for international students. WAU plays a crucial role in this transition, assisting students in securing employment and navigating visa changes post-graduation.
The WAU International Office, led by Dr. Beulah Manuel, offers many services. Testimonies from international alumni, now employed in the U.S., underscore the value of a WAU degree in facilitating their career paths.

LaToya Evans-Swain, who enrolled at WAU in the fall of 2020 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting, exemplifies this success. From 2018 to 2020, Evans-Swain embraced the diversity of the student body as a student worker and president of the International Student Club, Global Thinkers.
“The opportunity allowed me to meet students from various backgrounds and cultures, which broadened my worldview,” Evans-Swain said. “The guidance I received from my work supervisors was invaluable. Looking back, I wish I had minored in Computer Science, though my academic commitments were already substantial. My role as an accountant in Assets and Projects at Advent Health Orlando, Florida, is directly supported by the education and preparation I received at WAU.”
Evans-Swain also offered advice to incoming international students, encouraging them to engage fully with the opportunities and resources available at WAU. This includes participation in student activities and consulting with university staff for both academic and personal guidance.

Glenese Tulloch, a graduate from Jamaica who completed her Master of Business Administration in April 2023, now works as a Payroll Accountant at WAU. She credits the School of Business with providing not only practical skills but also the mental readiness required for effective performance.
“The warm welcome I received as a new international student was comforting,” Tulloch said. “WAU facilitated my adaptation to American culture and practices, balancing work and exploration for a fulfilling experience. For prospective students, please note that you will never be left alone on your journey at WAU, the International Student Services Department will be with you from your first day, after graduation, and through your CPT, and or OPT experience.
Coming to WAU was the right choice for me and I know it will be for you too.”
Through their stories, Evans-Swain and Tulloch illustrate the significant impact of WAU’s commitment to its international community, providing a foundation for success both academically and professionally.
