TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Washington Adventist University (WAU) senior Fernanda Rinza has made university history as the first graduate to earn a Bachelor of Music Therapy, a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, and graduate as a member of the Honors College.

Rinza, who will receive her Bachelor of Music Therapy degree this May, recently passed the national music therapy board exam, earning the distinction of Music Therapy – Board Certified (MT-BC). This accomplishment highlights her dedication to her field and solidifies her expertise in music therapy—a discipline that uses music to support individuals’ emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being.

In addition to her success in music therapy, Rinza has excelled in vocal performance, demonstrating exceptional talent and academic excellence throughout her time at WAU. Her ability to thrive in multiple disciplines, along with her distinction as an Honors College graduate, sets a precedent for future students aiming to pursue diverse academic and professional pathways.

“Fernanda’s accomplishments are truly remarkable,” said Dr. Daniel Lau, chair of WAU’s Music Department. “Her ability to balance rigorous coursework in both music therapy and vocal performance, while also excelling in the Honors College, speaks volumes about her dedication and passion.”

Reflecting on her time at WAU, Rinza credited the university’s individualized support and the collaborative efforts of her professors. “What I liked most about WAU is that although the school is small, it doesn’t limit the opportunities we have access to,” Rinza said. “If you’re determined to reach your goals, the professors will help you go above and beyond.”

Rinza also noted the lasting relationships she built with faculty. “Even after graduating, I can still reach out to my professors for help or advice. They’re always there to support me,” she said.

Rinza’s achievement serves as an inspiration to her peers and the broader WAU community. Her success reinforces the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and preparing students for meaningful careers.
