Takoma Park, Md. — Washington Adventist University (WAU) recently concluded its Week of Spiritual Emphasis, titled A Thriving Life, a five-day series designed to inspire students to live fully in God’s purpose. The week focused on thriving spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and relationally, with powerful messages, heartfelt student testimonies, and vibrant worship services that left a lasting impact on the campus community.

The series, held from February 3–7, was a collaborative effort led by Ali Bryan, WAU’s Religious Vice President of the Student Association, and Dr. Jiwan Moon, University Chaplain. Together, they worked to create and organize W.I.S.E., ensuring the program fostered spiritual growth and resilience. Each day featured a specific topic rooted in Scripture, with dynamic messages from speakers including Ali Bryan, Daniela Cruz, Andrew Darks, and Clifton Koilpillai:
- The Foundation of Thriving — Emphasizing the abundant life found in Jesus Christ (John 10:10).
- The Mindset to Thrive — Encouraging students to renew their minds and align their thoughts with God’s Word (Romans 12:2).
- Habits to Thrive Daily — Teaching the importance of spiritual disciplines like prayer and Bible study (Colossians 3:23).
- Thriving through Trials — Finding joy and perseverance in challenges (James 1:2-3).
- Thriving for God’s Glory — Reflecting God’s light and leaving a lasting legacy (Matthew 5:16).
Student Testimonies Highlight Life-Changing Moments

The highlight of the week was the emotional baptism of Jenae Harris, a first-year psychology and counseling major. During her testimony, Jenae spoke candidly about the grief and anxiety she experienced after the loss of a loved one. She described how prayer helped her find peace and led her to recommit her life to Christ.
“I was filled with so much fear and anger at God for taking her away from me,” she shared. “But through prayer, I realized He was still calling me and reminding me that no matter how far I had strayed, His love and forgiveness were always there.”
The congregation celebrated as Jenae publicly declared her faith and was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In addition, Danice Pedersen, a first-year X-ray technician student, participated in a profession of faith ceremony. She shared her journey of rediscovering her relationship with God and her decision to live according to His teachings. “This is a defining moment in my life,” Danice said. “I’m grateful for the support and love I’ve found in this community.”
Throughout the week, students were encouraged to embrace the mindset of thriving rather than just surviving. The speakers shared personal testimonies and practical advice for living an intentional, purpose-driven life. “We are called not just to survive, but to thrive and experience the abundant life God has planned for us,” one speaker said, referencing John 10:10.
The biblical story of Job was used to illustrate how trials can be transformative. Students were reminded that challenges can strengthen character and deepen their relationship with God. “God is always working for our good,” the speaker added, citing Romans 8:28.
Each session featured powerful worship led by WAU’s music team, with Holy Ground as the theme song for the week. The services were interactive, offering students opportunities to reflect, respond, and take next steps in their spiritual journey. QR codes on screen provided options for students to receive Bible resources, join small groups, and ask questions for the Saturday Q&A at Gateway Church. With the resources given, over 70 students accepted Jesus Christ and rededicated their ife to Him as their personal Lord and Savior.
Prayers led by students, including bilingual prayers in English and Spanish, focused on topics such as surrendering to Christ, renewing minds, and developing spiritual disciplines.
The series ended with a call to action, urging students to take the lessons learned and apply them in their daily lives. “God calls us to thrive for His glory,” the closing speaker said. “Let your light shine in everything you do, and trust that He has a plan for your life.”
As the week drew to a close, students left inspired and equipped to live with resilience, faith, and intention. Many committed to deepening their spiritual journey, finding strength in the knowledge that they are part of a thriving, supportive community at WAU.
