TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Washington Adventist University (WAU) concluded its Black History Month celebrations with a convocation hosted by the Black Student Union (BSU). The event, held in the university chapel, highlighted themes of legacy, perseverance and empowerment.

The program opened with a call for reflection, encouraging attendees to share their experiences throughout the month’s events. Students were reminded of the significance of Black History Month and the importance of continuing conversations about identity, unity and justice beyond February.

A major highlight of the convocation was a keynote address by WAU alumna Pastor Claudia Allen. Allen, a well-respected advocate, emphasized the importance of standing on the shoulders of past generations while stepping boldly into leadership roles. She underscored the role of faith and community in overcoming societal challenges, drawing from biblical narratives and historical examples to drive home her message of resilience and responsibility.

Throughout the program, students and faculty heard the significance of past civil rights victories and the ongoing need for advocacy and action. The message was clear: while giants of oppression and inequality have been defeated in the past, new challenges arise, and it is the responsibility of today’s generation to confront them.

In a particularly poignant moment, attendees were reminded that movements for justice and equity are not solely historical events but ongoing responsibilities. Allen called upon students to be the “next generation of giant slayers,” challenging them to pursue justice in their academic, professional and personal lives.

The event concluded with a call to action, urging students to continue honoring Black history not just through remembrance, but through intentional action and service.

The Black Student Union’s leadership expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed their commitment to fostering an environment of inclusion, education and empowerment at WAU. With the powerful messages shared during the convocation, students departed with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to carry forward the legacy of those who came before them.
