SILVER SPRING, Md. — Washington Adventist University student Gabriella Apola and her siblings brought music and ministry together in a moving family concert held Tuesday, June 24, at the Inter-Faith Chapel of Leisure World Retirement Community.
Gabriella, a rising junior at WAU, is double majoring in biology and chemistry, as well as music. Her performance highlighted not only her individual talent, but also the depth of training, discipline, and purpose nurtured at WAU. A violinist and dedicated student in the Department of Music, Gabriella is also a Carnegie Scholar who performs regularly at Carnegie Hall in New York City and has soloed with the New England Youth Ensemble.
The concert featured Gabriella alongside her siblings — Drusilla, a senior at Andrews University; Jana, a rising junior at Spencerville Adventist Academy; and Reuben, a rising junior at Atholton Adventist Academy. Together, they perform under the name ACTS Through Music (Acknowledging Christ in Today’s Society), a ministry-oriented group committed to using their gifts to inspire others through classical and sacred music.
“Gabriella exemplifies the holistic education we strive for at WAU,” said Paul Coppola, professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, who attended the performance. “She combines scientific curiosity with artistic excellence and spiritual purpose.”
ACTS Through Music has ministered at churches, schools, nursing homes, and international events. Through orchestral performances, private lessons, and community outreach, the Apola siblings have cultivated a diverse and sophisticated musical repertoire.
Their training includes collaborations with organizations such as the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra, Strings for Joy, and the Northern Virginia Suzuki Music School. Gabriella and Jana are active members of the New England Youth Ensemble and continue to sharpen their musical skills through recitals, masterclasses, and ensemble work.
Their younger brother Reuben, an accomplished pianist, often accompanies his sisters during performances and is also recognized for his solo work.

The children are guided by their parents, Stephen and Peris Apola. Pastor Stephen Apola, originally from Kenya, is an Adventist minister who served for nine years in South Bend, Ind., before relocating to Maryland to work with the local Adventist Conference. Together, the family emphasizes service, faith, and excellence.
The Apolas’ concert at Leisure World was more than a recital — it was a heartfelt expression of family unity, musical discipline, and spiritual calling. For WAU, Gabriella’s role in this ministry serves as a shining example of the university’s commitment to developing the whole student: mind, body, and spirit.
