Washington Adventist University (WAU) launched the 2025–2026 academic year with a powerful Opening Convocation at Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The service, centered on the charge “Be Strong,” blended scripture, prayer, and stirring music to call the campus community to courage and faith.

The tone was set from the very first note. Angel Contreras on viola and pianist Daniel Lau opened the service with Brahms’ “Allegro appassionato” from Sonata in F Minor, a performance marked by passion and resolve. The energy continued with the processional, Campra’s “Rigaudon,” which carried students, faculty, and trustees into the sanctuary with a sense of dignity and determination.

Strength was also found in scripture. Dr. Olive Hemmings, Chair of the Religion Department, read from 1 Chronicles 28:20: “Be strong and of good courage, and do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord God is with you.”

President Dr. Weymouth Spence built upon that foundation with his charge to the university. “It is not about how strong you are,” Spence said. “It is about how strong God is. Be strong and courageous, do the work, and do not be afraid, for the Lord your God is with you.”

Music underscored the theme throughout. A quartet of violinists—Gabriella Apola, Alejandra Anzola, Brian Liu, and Dr. Preston Hawes—performed Vivaldi’s “Allegro” from Concerto for Four Violins in B Minor, their harmonies a reminder of strength found in unity. Later, mezzo-soprano Marcela Jones-Moreno offered a moving rendition of Malotte’s “The Lord’s Prayer,” accompanied by Lau, drawing the congregation into a moment of reverent surrender to God’s power.

Student Association President Zachary Low encouraged classmates to lean on faith and community. “This place is more than a university—it’s a family that will support you and help you become the person God has called you to be,” he said.

The service concluded with John Stanley’s triumphant “Trumpet Tune,” performed by organist Anwar Ottley, a fitting finale that sent students and faculty forward with confidence and courage.

At Washington Adventist University, “Be Strong” is more than a theme—it is a calling. With God’s strength, WAU enters the new academic year ready to engage minds, transform lives, and prepare hearts for service.
