From Student to Healthcare Leader: Gopi Sunkara’s Journey from WAU Classroom to White Oak Medical Center
When Gopi Sunkara began his undergraduate studies at Washington Adventist University, he knew he wanted to make a difference. What he didn’t yet realize was that his time at WAU would ignite a passion not only for service—but for transformational leadership in healthcare.
Today, Gopi serves as a Human Resources Coordinator at Adventist HealthCare’s White Oak Medical Center, where he plays a critical role in HR Operations, onboarding new team members, and ensuring credentialing and compliance across departments. It’s a position of responsibility—but for Gopi, it’s also preparation.
“I see every task I take on as a stepping stone toward becoming a healthcare leader who can drive real change,” he says. “Healthcare is deeply personal. The way we lead behind the scenes affects the care people receive. I want to lead with both strategy and compassion.”
That vision is what brought Gopi back to WAU as a graduate student. He is currently pursuing a dual master’s degree in Business Administration and Healthcare Administration—a program he chose specifically because it aligned with his values and long-term goals. “WAU shaped who I am,” he reflects. “It gave me the academic foundation and the spiritual grounding to pursue leadership not just as a title, but as a calling.”
Gopi’s time as an undergraduate was marked by academic excellence and active campus leadership. He earned degrees in Biology, Political Studies, and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies, But beyond the classroom, Gopi left a significant impact on campus life—serving as Senior Class President, Chair of the Student Senate, and a leader within the Honors College. His leadership reflected a deep commitment to student voice, community-building, and thoughtful service. One of the most formative aspects of his WAU experience came through the Center for Law and Public Policy. Through the Center for Law and Public Policy, he worked on national advocacy initiatives, giving him a broader perspective on how policy and systems shape lives—particularly in the realm of public health.
Those experiences informed his desire to pursue healthcare administration. At White Oak Medical Center, Gopi now works at the intersection of people, policy, and process—ensuring employees are supported, systems run smoothly, and patients ultimately benefit.
His current role has sharpened his operational skills, but it’s his vision for the future that truly sets him apart. “My goal isn’t just to work in healthcare—it’s to lead it. I want to be the kind of leader who listens, innovates, and serves—who never loses sight of the people at the heart of every hospital.”
In every space he enters, Gopi brings a unique blend of drive, compassion, and strategic thinking. Whether he’s coordinating a volunteer program, solving compliance challenges, or encouraging a new hire on their first day, he carries the WAU mission forward—with a clear purpose and a heart for service.
For Washington Adventist University, Gopi Sunkara is a shining example of what it means to lead with vision, serve with purpose, and grow with God. And for the future of healthcare, he’s a leader to watch.
