Baptisms Highlight Continuous Spiritual Growth at WAU Convocation

TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Washington Adventist University (WAU) held its final convocation of the year on Wednesday, December 4, a spiritually uplifting event marked by the baptism of two students, Titus Aina and Chenelle Gordon. Their testimonies of faith and redemption inspired attendees, showcasing the transformative power of God in their lives.

For Titus Aina, the decision to be baptized came after a deeply personal journey. “I grew up in a disciplined Christian African household, taught to embody Christ-like behavior,” Aina shared. However, as he grew older, he admitted to falling into relationships and habits that distanced him from God. After years of struggling with negativity and toxic behaviors, a turning point came when he read 1 John 5:14: “If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” Aina recounted, “Everything changed when I stopped battling negative thoughts alone and depended on God. My relationship with Him grew greater than I could ever imagine.”

Titus’ parents shared their joy and pride in his spiritual commitment. “Titus chose this school in 2015 at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist session held in San Antonio, Texas; he was enthusiastic about being involved with missionary work,” they said. “We have been praying for this day, and we are happy for him and the work he plans to do with Gideon 300.”

Chenelle Gordon, who described herself as a “prodigal daughter,” shared a moving testimony of her return to faith after years of hardship, including homelessness and academic struggles. Inspired by the story of the Prodigal Son, she recounted a moment in her college dorm when she cried out to God at her lowest point. “A gentle voice whispered, ‘Give it all to me and come home,’” Gordon said. From that moment, her life was transformed. “Jesus not only became my Father but also my greatest Friend. He restored my dignity and showed me my true worth.”

Dr. Weymouth Spence, President of WAU, reflected on the significance of the day. “Here at Washington Adventist University, we partner with all students, ensuring they are prepared not just for the workplace but for eternity. This day demonstrates the preparation for eternity,” he said, expressing gratitude to the campus community for their support of the university’s mission.

Chaplain Dr. Jiwan Moon, who conducted the baptisms, spoke about the spiritual revival sweeping the campus. “Witnessing two precious young adults dedicate their lives to God during our final convocation was both meaningful and memorable,” he said. He also noted that both students pledged to join WAU’s Gideon 300, a group of Campus Ministries leaders committed to living lives of service for God and others.
This convocation served as a testament to WAU’s dedication to nurturing spiritual growth alongside academic success. As Gordon put it, “If you’re lost, like I once was, know you’re not alone. Jesus waits, arms open wide, ready to love and redeem you.”
The event left many inspired, with testimonies of redemption and commitment to faith setting the tone for a hopeful and spiritually grounded new year at WAU.
