Betty Howard Center at WAU Enhances Student Engagement with Series of Events

TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Washington Adventist University’s Betty Howard Center took a step forward in its student engagement efforts on September 22, 2023, by organizing a trip for 25 students to the African American Museum in Washington, DC.
While the visit was brief, students immersed themselves in the museum’s exhibits, reflecting the groundbreaking contributions of African Americans. Among the many student remarks, Abigay Smith summed up the sentiment, stating, “I was profoundly moved by the Museum’s powerful exhibits, which vividly showcased the rich history and struggles of the African American community. Walking through the museum, I gained a deeper understanding of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The experience left me with a profound appreciation for the significance of their journey and the ongoing fight for equality and justice.”
Building on the momentum, the center successfully conducted a “Meet and Greet” on October 12, catering especially to new transfers. The event aimed to familiarize them with the WAU community and the resources the Betty Howard Center provides. Attendees enjoyed a sumptuous meal and expressed satisfaction.
Looking ahead, the center has outlined a comprehensive plan for the fall semester. As spring registration approaches, two events have been scheduled for November, targeting freshman athletes and new transfers. The events, dubbed “Lunch & Learn,” will provide students an opportunity to interact with department chairs, discuss their courses, and learn more about potential career paths.

In addition, the Betty Howard Center is gearing up for a “Game Night” on November 13, 2023, exclusively for freshman athletes. The evening is set to be a blend of fun, food, camaraderie, and bonding.
Holiday festivities are also on the horizon with a “Christmas Extravaganza” planned for early December. The university community is encouraged to stay tuned for updates and join the celebration that promises refreshments, music, and engaging conversations. The Betty Howard Center remains steadfast in its mission to foster academic success and create a nurturing environment for students at WAU.
