The Department of Student Life has launched a new counseling program, designed to help the community address a range of issues that can impact students wellness and performance. The program will be managed by new campus counselor, Mrs. Jahmela Williams.

Williams, a licensed clinical counselor, received her undergraduate degree from Oakwood University and a Master of education in counseling from Bowie State University. She earned a second Masters in special education from Northcentral University. She has worked with youth in a variety of settings for more than 10 years.

On Washington Adventist University (WAU) Ministry Department’s “Cruise with a Purpose,” January 5-14, Brittany Bower proved the perfect example of Christian humility and compassion.

Moved by the plight of a young girl, who arrived at a mission event in the Dominican Republic without shoes, Brittany, a junior biology major from Baltimore, promptly removed hers and handed them to the teenager. She spent the rest of the afternoon in her socks until a group member loaned her a pair of size 13 flip-flops.

Washington Adventist University women’s basketball team, Lady Shock, is lending it’s time to the Office of Admissions assisting Krista Byrd, admissions counselor with data entry and other routine tasks in the office. Byrd is also athletic specialist and assistant women’s basketball coach.

Lady Shock has been assisting the team over several weeks, including during the Christmas break.

“We greatly appreciate their time and effort,” Byrd said. “They give generously and what they do does make a difference to our small office.”

Konrad, 43, died at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, January 2, after a short illness.

“The Pursuit of Excellence” was the theme of the keynote addressed delivered by Interim Provost Patrick Williams, Ph.D., at the Provost’s Convocation, January 16, in Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In a spirited address, Williams urged the community to focus on excellence as the hallmark of everything that is done in the name of the institution.

“We strongly hold to the notion that to make this community the epitome of academic excellence, we must revisit how we conduct academic advising, ensure that the competencies and attributes we want student to possess are met before graduation, and, at the same time, improve our retention and graduation rates,” he said.

Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, E. Albert Reece, MD, Ph.D., MBA, has been appointed to the Washington Adventist University (WAU) Board of Trustees. He will serve on the board’s academic affairs sub-committee.

With his distinguished record of academic achievement, career experience, and leadership, Reece is expected to add tremendous value to the work of the board as the university’s oversight body.

The board of directors of WGTS 91.9, named Douglas K. Walker interim general manager, effective Thursday, January 17, 2013. Walker’s appointment comes in the wake of the death of vice president and general manager John Konrad on January 2.

“We hired Doug to make sure the station’s ministry continues in a strong and stable manner while the search for the next general manager is conducted,” said chair of WGTS board, Rob Vandeman. “Doug has great managerial experience, as well as a long and positive history with WGTS as both a volunteer and a board member, and the radio station staff is very comfortable with how he fits the ministry’s profile.”

Pastor Al Konrad, John’s father, spoke in loving memory of a son whom he said approached life with a special kind off exuberance.

The First Generation Ambassadors Program (FGAP), an auxiliary of Washington Adventist University’s (WAU) Center for Student Success, is gearing up for his annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

On Sunday, January 27, the group will clean up the King Memorial on the National Mall. FGAP Coordinator, Kassie May Edwards, says the group is marking the day a week later because of Inauguration Day activities on January 21.
