TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Washington Adventist University (WAU) hosted a spirited convocation on Wednesday that blended worship, creativity, and inspiration, marking the official launch of the university’s first-ever Comedy Conference, presented in partnership with Funny&Amen.

The service began with an atmosphere of praise as the university’s praise team led the congregation in powerful renditions of “Shout to the Lord” and “Worthy Is the Lamb.” The worship experience prepared hearts for the morning’s special guest presentation, introduced by Professor Bradford Haas of the Honors College.

Kevin Hackenberg, acclaimed filmmaker, storyteller, and founder of Funny&Amen, delivered a message titled “Born Again, Again: The Power of Humility.” Drawing from his experiences in the entertainment industry and his personal journey of faith, Hackenberg explored how humor can be a tool for healing, humility, and spiritual growth.

Through vivid storytelling, film clips, and thoughtful reflection, Hackenberg encouraged students to embrace laughter as a divine gift—one that can bring light to serious topics and strengthen communities of faith. “Comedy has the power to connect us, to help us see truth from a new perspective, and to remind us that joy is a part of God’s design,” he said.

Adding a lively dimension to the morning, Hackenberg was joined on stage by Jordan Scott Gilbert, an award-winning actor, producer, and director, who delighted the audience with his comedic improvisation and engaging presence. The pair’s chemistry illustrated the conference’s theme—how faith and humor can intersect to create meaningful, restorative dialogue.

The convocation also served as the opening event for the WAU Comedy Conference, a three-day experience highlighting the role of comedy in faith, creativity, and emotional wellness.

  • Thursday, Oct. 30 — Film Premiere: Murder at the Lakehouse, an immersive, satirical mystery inspired by cult classics such as The Room and The Disaster Artist, followed by a discussion with the director about the art of comedic storytelling.
  • Friday, Oct. 31 — Comedy & Academic Symposium: Beginning at 1 p.m., the Comedy Masterclass will allow participants to share material and receive professional critique from comedians. At 2:15 p.m., the Academic Symposium will feature expert panelists exploring how humor enhances mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
  • Saturday, Nov. 1 — Stand-Up Showcase: The weekend will conclude with a family-friendly comedy night featuring KMack, Seth Knorr, and Leland Klassen, promising a night of clean, uplifting entertainment.

Professor Haas praised the initiative, noting that the collaboration with Funny&Amen “reflects WAU’s ongoing commitment to uniting faith, intellect, and creativity in ways that strengthen both hearts and minds.”

All Comedy Conference events will be held in the Student Activity Center and are free and open to the public.
