Empowering Futures: Inside the Betty Howard Center for Student Success at Washington Adventist University
Written by: Giovanni Torrente
TAKOMA PARK, Md. — At Washington Adventist University, the Betty Howard Center for Student Success is dedicated to helping students navigate the complexities of college life and employment. With the spring semester drawing to a close, the Center is already looking ahead, focusing on advising students for the fall.
On March 26, the Center hosted its first Early Registration event in the Student Activity Center (SAC) to kick-start the process. The event attracted an enthusiastic crowd of 25-30 students, with faculty and administrators on hand to offer support. This initiative is part of the Center’s broader effort to boost retention and student success.
Additionally, the Betty Howard Center recently sponsored a Resume Writing Workshop titled “How to Get a Job,” which was well received by the 15-20 students in attendance. The workshop featured Michael Watyoka a Washington Adventist University alumnus, who delivered an exceptional presentation on effective job-hunting strategies. His advice to students included being proactive, networking, volunteering in their field of interest, maintaining good grades, and connecting with recruiters and directors from targeted companies.
Dr. Betty Johnson, Dean of the Betty Howard Center, expressed her appreciation for the impact of these events. “No matter the discipline or future plans of our students, knowing how to secure a job and presenting a compelling resume is crucial,” Johnson said. “These events are indicative of the Center’s commitment to providing academic success opportunities and guidance to all students.”
In this regard, a Career Fair was held on Thursday, April 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., where students had the opportunity to meet vendors from 18 companies, network, and present their resumes.
Looking forward, the center has announced a conclusive event for the year:
- An Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 17, with a series of events including the Convocation Awards Ceremony from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the SGPS Awards Ceremony from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the Honor Society Induction from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., all taking place at the Sligo Church.
The mission of the Betty Howard Center is to enhance students’ academic experiences, improve retention rates, and increase their chances of success. The Center encourages students not to wait for opportunities but to create them.
