Fall 2021 Opening Convocation
Written by: IMC Department
Washington Adventist University’s Opening Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, was the official start to the 2021-22 academic year and a renewed excitement for the resume of campus learning and activities. Since 2019, where we transitioned to streaming convocation online, we return to continue our weekly convocation programs in the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church. In his charge, Relationship Rich Education, President, Dr. Weymouth Spence welcomed the learning community to campus, “This is a place where we blend faith and learning to produce graduates who bring competence and moral leadership to their communities throughout the world…this is a place where we engage minds and transform lives. Students, faculty, and staff, this is Washington Adventist University!”
“Over the next ten years, “ Dr. Spence continued, “we will tackle the list of our goals; the overall desired outcome is to create an excellent place for employees to work and for students to learn. During this period, we will continue under the Pillars of Excellence to support our students in the following six skills of the 21st century: faith development, leadership, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and professionalism.”
Provost, Dr. Cheryl Kisunzu, said, “Dear students of our Fall 2021 Semester, our 2021-2022 academic year as your faculty and staff, we are finding our hearts filled with mixed emotions. We have missed you. Our hearts burned within us as we welcome you back to in-person learning here at your university, Washington Adventist University. During this pandemic, you have experienced the assault of this unrelenting, unseen virus COVID-19 and through it all, you have learned to trust in Jesus. You recognize the Lord’s plans to prosper you and to give you a future and as hope happens one course at a time, one semester at a time, one year at a time until you reach a degree completion.”
Thank you to the 2021 Fall Opening Convocation participants and Music Department performers!
