Great News for WAU Nursing Program!

Written by: Provost Cheryl Kisunzu

On November 12, 2021, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education formally notified our WAU President, Dr. Weymouth Spence, and the Director for our WAU Nursing Program, Dr. Tijuanna Griffin that in its October 12-15, 2021 meeting – an accreditation action was taken to grant maximum 10-year reaccreditation to both the baccalaureate degree program in nursing at Washington Adventist University and the master’s degree program in nursing at Washington Adventist University. The accreditation action is effective as of March 31, 2021, which is the first day of the program’s recent CCNE evaluation.  The next on-site evaluation is therefore scheduled to take place in the spring of 2031.

These actions by CCNE, empower our WAU program of nursing to respond to our nation’s current and persistent nursing crisis as exacerbated during this global pandemic. Furthermore, it is significant to note that our WAU nursing program,  was established as its inaugural course of study shortly after this institution opened in 1904. It is also noted to be the oldest and first accredited nursing program in the state of Maryland. Accordingly, this maximum reaccreditation reaffirms our university’s commitment to bring healing to our world through distinctive excellence in nursing care as uniquely experienced through distinctive excellence in nursing education.
