Honors Program Celebrates Modernist Poet, David Jones

The exhibition, Major Book Illustrations 1921 – 1932, begins March 14 and will run through April 20.  It will feature wood and copper engravings that were used mainly as illustrations for private press books. Similar to retrospectives of Jones’s work at the National Museum of Wales and the National Library of Wales, the WAU selection allows a North American audience to view more than fifty works printed in Jones’s lifetime. appointment.

An interdisciplinary conference, Culture & Artifice, will be held March 29-30. It will explore Jones’s cultural theory and how his creative works confront the challenges of modern culture. The conference will feature presenters from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

Between the Wars: The Years of Achievement will be screened March 29, at 7:00pm. Filmmakers Derek Shiel and Adam Alive follow the film “In Search of David Jones: Artist, Soldier, Poet” (2008) with a new film about the life of David Jones (1895-1974) in the period between WWI and WWII. Derek Shiel will be present to provide an introduction to the film.

The New Fatigue, a poetry reading will take place, March 29 at 9:00pm. This reading features poems with Roman, Celtic, and Biblical contexts from The Sleeping Lord (1974) and The Roman Quarry (1981), including a rare performance of excerpts from Jones’s poem on Judas Iscariot titled “The Agent.”
