Malala Yousafzai Features Marie Claire Kaberamanzi in New Book

Takoma Park, MD. (March 4, 2019) Washington Adventist University’s beloved Marie Claire Kaberamanzi is featured in a new book written by Malala Yousafzai titled We Are Displaced. Written in two parts, the book starts with Malala’s personal life story and continues with stories of girls from around the world.

In the book, Malala states “I remember Marie Claire not only for the story she told but also for the story she didn’t. She was full of strength, but I could hear the pain in her heart and see the tears in her eyes.”

You may remember the September 2017 story where Marie Claire was invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly. The invitation to speak came from Malala herself when the two young ladies first met on The Girl Power Trip in Lancaster, Pennsylvania: a world tour aimed at meeting different girls and listening to their stories. Stories Malala then took to various presidents and prime ministers urging them to support the education of girls.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Marie Claire remembers always being on the run due to the civil war. In the book, she recounts the story of her family going into hiding just a few hours after her birth. Some years later, the family of eight, moved to Zambia and went from a refugee camp to a one-room house. Despite losing her mother to the atrocities of war, and all the oppression faced, she determined to follow her dreams.

Marie Claire had always considered writing out her story and was eager to work on this project with Malala. She also looks forward to traveling to New York in March to celebrate the book release.
