The Honors College curriculum is innovative, interdisciplinary, flexible and can be customized to your needs. Those who finish the Honors College curriculum earn an Honors Interdisciplinary degree in addition to their standard major area of study. That means you will major in the subject area of your choice and be an Honors Interdisciplinary major. The additional degree you earn is makes the Honors College unique.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOUR CURRICULUM?
There are two important things to mention here: First, taking the Honors General Education track will help you finish your general education courses more quickly, freeing up your schedule for the classes you want to take. Second, as an Honors Interdisciplinary major/minor you will be able to customize your academic experience by taking unique courses offered only to students in the Honors College. Popular courses offered in the past include:
- Model United Nations (offered each Spring; class plans a major MUN conference)
- Diseases in History (offered for history or science credits)
- Art and Adventism (offered for religion or humanities credits)
- Civil War Study Tour (offered for history or humanities credits)
- Bio-Ethics (offered for science or philosophy credits)
- Technology and Ethics (offered for computer science/sociology credits)
- Elections 2020 (Fall 2020)
- Pre-Law seminars (offered each semester for 1 or 2 credits)
What will you study as a member of the Honors College?
Honors College students follow a unique, interdisciplinary general education program. In your first semester (Freshman) you will take several Honors courses that will replace traditional general elective courses. For example, Honors College students take ENGL101H – Honors Rhetoric in place of ENGL101 and COMM105. That’s right, Honors Rhetoric covers the general education requirements of TWO classes! All Honors students will also take HNRS115 – Honors Seminar and HNRS125 – Biblical and Classical Roots. You will round out your schedule by also taking traditional classes in the area of your major.

Honors Interdisciplinary Courses: 24-26 hours
Honors majors need to take 7 Honors electives plus produce a capstone thesis, for a total
of 8 courses. Courses can be cross-listed in multiple subjects, and for both lower and upper division credit, as needed. At least 6 credit hours of designated “learning-on-location” courses are required. These would include courses focused on resources in Washington, D.C., in the United Kingdom, study tours, or Adventist Colleges Abroad language programs.
Honors courses not listed with prefix HNRS are denoted with an “H” at the end of the course number. For example, a regular RELT Topics course would be listed as RELT 294, whereas an Honors RELT Topics course would be listed as RELT 294H.
Students do not need to take an Honors elective in the area of their second major.
