The new semester is officially here and WAU started off the year with a grand welcome!
The semester began with Opening Convocation, which was held at Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church. Beautiful music was played by the String Quartet for the prelude as students, faculty, and staff filled the church. As the program continued, the opening prayer was given by Student Association President Ricardo Flores, Jr. and following his prayer was another musical section by our music department.
The speaker for Opening Convocation was our Provost, Cheryl Kisunzu, who gave an amazing speech entitled, “Exceptional Love”. The title speaks for itself! She spoke on how “what the world needs now is love sweet love” and that everything that happens in life should begin first with love.
There is a lot happening in the world today; from the fires in Australia to volcanoes in the Philippines…Sometimes with all the turmoil we miss or forget about why we are here. We are here to love. The Word of God says in Romans 13:8: “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.”
As we start the semester in a brand new year (decade for some), let us remember that whatever we do, do in love. It’s not always easy doing things in love; sometimes we are tested with that difficult person, kids giving you trouble, a hard job, or a hard class. Though the road may be narrow, it’s always worth it.
Thankfully, we have an example of how to give exceptional love – through Jesus! He came down to this world to be the greatest example of love ever known. He died on the cross for us and showed us that though the flesh is weak, God is greater and God is love.
