Pastor Basil Sturrup Launches Scholarship for Congregation and Community Members Eyeing Washington Adventist University
Pastor Basil Sturrup of Faith Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hartford, Connecticut, recently discussed a new scholarship initiative by his church. The goal is to provide students with opportunities similar to the impactful experience his daughter had at Washington Adventist University (WAU).
Sturrup’s motivation to champion the scholarship stems from observing his daughter’s significant spiritual and personal growth at WAU. He believes in the institution’s capability to guide students towards discovering their life’s direction.
The financial aspect of the scholarship is tailored to the individual needs of families, ensuring equitable access. Although it’s the scholarship’s inaugural year, Sturrup envisions a sustainable, influential initiative in the coming years.
The alliance with Dr. Spence, the president of WAU and a former elder at Sturrup’s church, further solidifies this venture’s promise. The church’s overarching mission remains the holistic development of their youth, both academically and spiritually.
A notable beneficiary of the scholarship, Daniel Am-Fo, shares his enthusiasm. “My goal is to become a software engineer,” Daniel said. The excitement was palpable when he found out he was a scholarship recipient. “I couldn’t believe it.” Daniel opted for WAU over other universities, citing the attractive campus and welcoming atmosphere. He emphasized the rareness of such opportunities, advising fellow recipients to “work hard, be grateful, and do their best.” Expressing gratitude, Daniel added, “It feels good that I’m being given this opportunity and being supported to pursue the education I want.” He also made a lighthearted acknowledgment of Pastor Sturrup, whom he remembered with a chuckle.
Regarding his university experience, Daniel genuinely remarked, “My experience at WU has been so amazing. I would never trade this for anything else.”
