Revolutionizing Education: SASDAC and WAU Forge New Pathways with Historic Partnership Agreement
On Nov. 18, a momentous collaboration was formalized between the South Asian Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SASDAC) and Washington Adventist University (WAU), marked by the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding. This pivotal agreement designates SASDAC as an essential conduit for students pursuing education at WAU.

Dr. Weymouth Spence, President of WAU, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. “We are happy that Washington Adventist University can be a partner in this project, thanks to the efforts of our Provost Dr. Cheryl Kisunzu,” he said. This initiative highlights the mutual commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and upholding Christian values.

Pastor John Daniel, a senior pastor at SASDAC, is leading a scholarship program in collaboration with WAU. He shares, “this initiative is particularly focused on supporting church members and international students, aiming to reinforce WAU’s dedication to high-quality education and to attract global talent.”
By 2024, the program aims to make a substantial impact, offering subsidized education to deserving students. It forms part of a larger strategy to improve Christian higher education. Pastor Daniel’s vision involves linking student incentives with WAU, thereby strengthening the connection between Christian values and advanced education.
To broaden the program’s scope, SASDAC has appointed two representatives responsible for recruiting students from international schools. This strategic move is key to developing a global network that connects potential students to WAU and fosters a diverse academic community.
Pastor Daniel emphasized, the scholarship program’s significance in the church community, especially its commitment to covering part of the tuition fees, thereby making Christian education more accessible and aligning with the church’s mission of integrating Christian principles into education.
The program uniquely focuses on students from India, creating a bridge between WAU and these students for cultural exchange and mutual learning. Beyond financial aid, the church is actively involved in facilitating students’ cultural and educational integration, partnering with various organizations to provide enriching, practical experiences.
Pastor Daniel also highlighted the program’s importance in raising awareness of mental health issues within the educational sector. This initiative aligns with the church’s focus on health, particularly mental health, within the Adventist education framework.
For scholarship applicants, Pastor Daniel advises maintaining a strong academic record, holistic development, and seeking stable, growth-oriented job opportunities. This comprehensive approach is designed not only for academic success but also for preparing students for life’s challenges.
Summarizing this initiative, the program reflects the church’s commitment to integrating education, mental health awareness, and Christian values, embodying the spirit of the Adventist education philosophy. Dr. Cheryl Kisunzu, Provost of WAU, encapsulated the excitement and vision of this partnership by quoting Exodus 34:10: “Watch for the new things I am about to do – it has already started to happen!” The MOU signing event symbolizes a shared dedication to enriching the lives of not only local SASDAC members but also Southern Asians worldwide through Adventist Education. “We are excited about this ‘new thing’ and look forward to minds being engaged, lives transformed, and service enhanced in distinctive ways which exceed anything that we can ask or imagine (Eph. 3:18) through this inaugural partnership,” added Dr. Kisunzu.
