Seven-Time World Karate Champion Willie “BAM” Johnson Inspires WAU Community at Convocation
TAKOMA PARK, Md. (Sept. 18, 2024) — Washington Adventist University (WAU) welcomed renowned martial artist and motivational speaker Willie “The BAM” Johnson at its convocation, where he shared his journey of personal transformation and faith.
Johnson, a seven-time world karate champion and two-time All-American, is a leader in the martial arts community, known for his dynamic, universal approach to fitness—both physical and spiritual. His speech, rooted in his life story, centered on the themes of overcoming adversity, embracing purpose, and maximizing time.
“We have work to do,” Johnson told the audience, as he emphasized the importance of personal responsibility and dedication. “We are all here for a reason, and it’s up to us to make the most of the time we have.”
Johnson’s message was interwoven with his own experiences, from facing challenges growing up to finding faith and turning his life around. “I had to go to a dark place,” Johnson said, referring to a time in his life when he was incarcerated. “But that dark place is where I found God, and it was through Him that I became who I am today.”
Johnson’s martial arts career spans over 40 years, and his influence extends beyond physical fitness. He is the creator of the Universal Martial Arts System and the owner of BAM’s Martial Arts and Fitness, where he works with students of all ages. His message to the WAU community was one of unity, strength, and the power of faith.
“I wake up every morning with a mission,” Johnson said. “God has given me the strength and the opportunity to not just survive but to thrive—and to give back to others in the process.”
During the convocation, Johnson reflected on his family’s role in his success, crediting his wife and children for their support. “My family is my joy,” he said. “Everything I do is for them, and everything I am today is because of them.”
Johnson’s story of resilience and redemption left a powerful impression on the WAU audience. He concluded his talk by encouraging students to maximize their potential and serve their communities with passion and integrity.
“Maximizing your time and giving your best in every moment is what it’s all about,” Johnson said. “Because someone is always watching, and what you put out in the world will come back to you.”
