TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Washington Adventist University (WAU) will host its 2025 Graduation Weekend from May 2–4, welcoming esteemed speakers and honoring exemplary individuals who embody the institution’s values of service, excellence, and faith.

The weekend will begin with the Friday evening Consecration Service featuring Dr. Anwar Ottley, associate professor and director of choral activities at WAU. An accomplished conductor, worship leader, and published arranger, Ottley has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Washington National Cathedral, and other major venues. A WAU alumnus, he is passionate about training the next generation of worship leaders and musicians.

Saturday’s Baccalaureate Service will feature Pastor Charles A. Tapp, president of the Potomac Conference Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists, which comprises over 40,000 members, 200 congregations, and 16 schools across the Mid-Atlantic region. Tapp brings more than four decades of experience in ministry and education, having served as both pastor and educator domestically and abroad. He is also a seasoned broadcaster and communications consultant, currently hosting Simple Truths for Life, a syndicated radio program heard throughout the U.S. and internationally. WAU awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2019 in recognition of his contributions to ministry and education.

On Sunday, WAU alumna and renowned trial attorney Gwen-Marie Davis Hicks will address the graduating class at the Commencement Ceremony. A 2002 graduate of the university and the founding partner of GDH Law, Hicks currently serves as president of the Maryland Association for Justice and holds leadership roles with several national legal organizations. Throughout her career, she has advocated for civil justice reform and mentored countless young professionals.
During Commencement, WAU will also present its prestigious Presidential Awards to two individuals whose lives reflect the university’s mission.

Carol Pauline Varner, a former Takoma Park City Council member, will be recognized for her lifelong commitment to public service and community building. Varner has served on the boards of the Takoma Foundation, WGTS 91.9 FM, Washington Adventist Hospital, and others. Known for producing the ethics-centered radio program Londis on Line, Varner continues to share her faith through music and ministry.

Dr. Nilima Mehra, an internationally celebrated biochemist, educator, and media executive, will also receive the Presidential Award. Founder of Global Television Networks Inc., Mehra has dedicated more than five decades to broadcasting, humanitarian work, and mentoring young professionals. She has taught at institutions including McGill University and the University of Pennsylvania and has received numerous global accolades, including honors from the United Nations and the U.S. Congress.
Graduation Weekend is a signature celebration of the WAU experience, where faith, service, and scholarship intersect. It highlights not only the achievements of the graduating class but also the university’s commitment to preparing students for purpose-driven leadership.
