TAKOMA PARK, Md. — On October 4th, Washington Adventist University (WAU) students and faculty took to the streets of the neighboring DMV, embarking on a mission of goodwill. Their collective efforts included cleaning, renovation, food packing, and offering complimentary health assessments.

With this biannual initiative, an institution like WAU, has consistently uplifted the community surrounding the campus. Participants regularly report feeling a deep sense of fulfillment and joy from the act of selfless giving.

“Service Day has been an integral part of WAU for decades,” said The Vice President of Student Life Dr. Ralph Johnson, who spearheads the organization of the event. “Twice every year, our university community comes together for this noble cause. We’re particularly proud this year as over 400 members of our community contributed, making it one of our most successful years to date.”

The success of Service Day is attributed to rigorous planning. Engagements with local agencies and organizations begin months in advance to ensure smooth execution. Following these engagements, the university puts out a call to its members, inviting them to participate in various activities.

“The enthusiasm this year was unmatched,” Dr. Johnson commented. “Attendance surpassed figures from recent years, a testament to our community’s eagerness to make a difference. The energy at Veterans Plaza was especially memorable, with students from the SA and nursing departments offering health services and even a gospel concert.”

WAU’s collaborative spirit is further exemplified in its enduring partnership with the Adventist Community Center in Silver Spring. John Gavin, the center’s Director, lauded the efforts of WAU students. “Their Service Day contributions are always significant. This year, they prepared winter essentials, ensuring underserved families had warm clothing as temperatures begin to drop. Their commitment was evident in their diligent preparation and distribution.”

In closing, while WAU’s Service Day contributions may seem humble, the university holds that such compassionate acts pave the way for a brighter and kinder world.
