Washington Adventist University Celebrates 120th Anniversary at Commencement Ceremony

Takoma Park, Maryland (MD) – Washington Adventist University recently celebrated its 120th anniversary with a remarkable Commencement Weekend, honoring the achievements of 160 graduates. The event was marked by a series of ceremonies and dedication events, each contributing to the rich tapestry of the university’s history.

The weekend kicked off with the Department of Medical Imaging Pinning Ceremony on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 6:30 pm in the Sligo Church Atrium. This ceremony served as a special moment for students in the medical imaging program to be recognized for their dedication and commitment to their field of study.

Honors College Seniors Dedication

On Friday, May 3, 2024, the Honors College Senior Dedication took place at 4:30 pm in the Sligo Church Atrium. This year’s dedication was particularly significant, as it marked the highest number of graduates in 20 years, with 14 students being honored. The ceremony celebrated the academic achievements and leadership qualities of these students, who exemplify the university’s commitment to excellence.

Department of Nursing Pinning Ceremony

The Department of Nursing Pinning Ceremony followed on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 4:00 pm in the Sligo Church Atrium. This ceremony honored nursing graduates as they prepared to embark on their professional careers, symbolizing their transition from students to healthcare professionals.

Simultaneously, the Department of Religion held its Senior Dedication at 4:30 pm in Richards Hall Chapel. This event recognized graduates from the Department of Religion, who have been equipped with the knowledge and values to serve their communities and make a positive impact on society.

Speaker Timothy Lawrence Nelson Dean of Morrison Hall

Throughout the weekend, attendees were inspired by distinguished speakers who shared words of wisdom and encouragement. Timothy Lawrence Nelson, the Dean of Men at Washington Adventist University, delivered a heartfelt address on Friday night, emphasizing the value of faith and perseverance in the face of challenges.

Speaker Celeste Ryan Blyden, Executive Secretary for the Columbia Union

On Saturday morning, attendees were moved by Celeste Ryan Blyden’s inspiring message, highlighting the importance of ministry, leadership development, and fellowship. As a dedicated disciple of Jesus Christ and influential leader within the Seventh-day Adventist Church, her words resonated deeply with the audience.

Speaker Dr. Eng. Seleshi Bekele Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia

The main commencement speaker, Ambassador Dr. Eng. Seleshi Bekele, brought a global perspective to the ceremony, sharing insights gained from his extensive experience in national and international institutions. His address underscored the importance of leadership and service in shaping a better world.

Dr. Perez, Chair of the Biology Department, reflected on outstanding moments from the ceremony, including the recognition of student achievements. “The fact that 5 graduating students wearing the College Honors red robe were from the Program of Biology, precisely a newsworthy moment occurred when the BS Biology/pre-Med graduate Henrique Da Silva was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom!” he shared. Dr. Perez also highlighted the participation of adjunct faculty from the department, which contributed to the morale among faculty members.

Dr. Joyce Johnson, Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies

Dr. Joyce Johnson, Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, found the realization of sharing in students’ learning experiences to be most rewarding. “Sheer joy is what I experienced as I acknowledged students’ achievement of a life-changing milestone,” she expressed.

Henrique Da Silva, a graduate who received the President’s Biden Medal, reflected on his journey: “From the beginning until the end of the graduation ceremony, every single moment was memorable to me. It was a long journey for me, coming from Brazil, finishing high school here, and then starting my college life made me look back at all the things I went through, making me value every single moment of it. President Spence’s speech gave me the assurance and happiness to have chosen WAU as the beginning of my academic journey.”

Dr. Cheryl Kisunzu, Provost of Washington Adventist University, highlighted the emotional impact of witnessing students’ achievements. “My heart pulsates with joy when I consider that each student is a miracle who will now bring joy to our world through Christocentric service,” she shared.

Dr. Weymouth Spence, President of Washington Adventist University, expressed his pride in the graduates and their potential to serve humanity. “The completion and satisfaction of graduates and their parents give me the energy to do what I do every day to support the Mission and Vision of Washington Adventist University,” he stated.

As the ceremony concluded, Dr. Spence offered words of encouragement to the graduates. “The world will be a better place when WAU graduates exit through the Gateway of Service to serve humanity,” he affirmed.

In reflection, Dr. Kisunzu found particular meaning in the dedicatory and consecration services. “During each graduation, I find that the dedicatory and consecration services, where students get to share their testimonies of triumph through word and song, not only inspire my heart but the hearts of all in attendance,” she shared.
