Washington Adventist University Celebrates Leadership and Student Experiences at 2024 Visionaries Gala

TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Washington Adventist University (WAU) hosted its 2024 Visionaries Gala at the Congressional Country Club, celebrating leadership, social change, and student achievements. The event highlighted WAU’s commitment to higher education and community service, with a focus on its mission to equip future leaders for both the workplace and eternity.

“This event is not merely a tradition but a vital initiative designed to make Christian education affordable for our valued students,” said Dr. Weymouth Spence, President of WAU. “This year’s Gala holds even greater significance as it aligns with our ambitious Vision 2030—a strategic plan to fund student scholarships and elevate WAU into a thriving, distinctive institution defined by excellence in all we do.”

The awards ceremony honored several distinguished leaders, including Dr. Chandohok Jasdip Singh, founder of the Center for Social Change, and Dr. Sajid Tarar, CEO of the organization, for their work supporting vulnerable populations, such as seniors and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Singh reflected on his organization’s journey with WAU, saying, “Our journey began when we visited WAU and felt a special energy that inspired us to do more.” Dr. Tarar also highlighted the role of education in shaping leaders and praised WAU for its commitment to values and ethical leadership.

His Excellency Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad Al-Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United States, was honored with the award for Excellence in International Humanitarian Partnerships. While he was unable to attend, Ahmed Youssef Al-Shebani, Counselor a representative emphasized the growing collaboration between WAU and Qatar. The Aspire Zone, a renowned sports and education complex in Doha, was recognized for its partnership with WAU. Abdullah Al Naemi accepted the award on behalf of Aspire Zone’s CEO, Mohammad Khalifa Al Suwaidi, and noted that the collaboration would expand through a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in sports, health care, and education.

Several WAU students shared their personal experiences at the event, highlighting the university’s impact on their academic, personal, and spiritual growth. Tiara Best, a senior majoring in theology with a minor in music, reflected on her time as president of the Honors College and a former religious vice president, saying, “The leadership opportunities here have helped me grow, not just as a student, but as a leader. I’ve grown exponentially in leadership skills and my spiritual walk.”

Sophomore Ali Bryan, from New York City, praised WAU for living up to its mission of equipping leaders for both the workplace and eternity. He described how his involvement in student body government allowed him to take on leadership roles that extend beyond WAU, serving students across the U.S. and Canada. Vocal performance major Lysle Follette, also a sophomore, emphasized WAU’s commitment to academic excellence, stating, “We pride ourselves in delivering the greatest education, not just in Maryland, but in the world.”

Takudzwa Madhovi, a nursing major from Zimbabwe and a WAU alum with a degree in healthcare administration, expressed gratitude for the opportunities WAU provided, including an internship with Adventist Healthcare that led to a position in human resources. He shared his excitement about continuing his education in nursing. Freshman theology major Zandile Mawela, from South Africa, spoke emotionally about her spiritual journey at WAU, saying, “It has been family to me. I believe God prepared this place for me.”

Senior biology major Catusha Desjardins, from Florida, reflected on the strong sense of community at WAU and expressed her gratitude for financial aid programs like the “WAU Needs Grant,” which helped her pursue her education. She thanked the university’s supporters for their contributions, which have made it possible for her and others to achieve their academic goals.
