Washington Adventist University Launches New Honors College Podcast Exploring Faith and Politics

Written by: IMC Director Simonique Dietz

The WAU Center for Law and Law and Public Policy, housed in the Honors is excited to announce the launch of a new podcast that delves into the dynamic relationship between faith and politics. Hosted by co-directors of the Center for Law and Public Policy, Drs. Nicholas Miller and Jonathan Scriven, the podcast, titled Fides et Politicas, offers a unique perspective from the Seventh-day Adventist tradition on current political events and issues. The podcast’s name, meaning “faith and politics” in Latin, underscores its commitment to examining complex issues through the lens of Christian values and principles.

The inaugural episode introduces listeners to the podcast’s mission: to provide thoughtful dialogue around pressing political topics, influenced by faith-based values from a free church tradition. Drs. Miller and Scriven bring complementary perspectives; Dr. Miller, with his background in theology and legal work, and Dr. Scriven, with his experience in political campaigns and international relations, explore the intersection of their fields to see where faith and political insights overlap and inform each other.

In their opening discussion, the hosts reflect on the diverse understanding of “faith” and “politics,” aiming to clarify how they’ll approach these terms. “We both come from a tradition that values the freedom of belief while recognizing the importance of civic responsibility,” Dr. Miller said, emphasizing the role of the Christian in society. “This podcast seeks to examine how these values can help illuminate some of today’s most pressing issues.”

One unique aspect of Fides et Politicas is its exploration of how faith perspectives influence views on social justice, equality, and governance. Both professors note the importance of engaging with issues beyond partisan divides, taking a historical perspective that includes figures like Roger Williams, William Penn, and Ellen White—leaders in the church who also championed societal reforms.

Listeners can look forward to thoughtful episodes on timely issues, featuring expert guests from various religious traditions. “Our pioneers believed deeply in the role of faith in social responsibility, whether through abolition or temperance reform,” said Dr. Scriven. “We’re excited to explore how that legacy of involvement can apply to contemporary issues.”

The first episode of Fides et Politicas is currently on Instagram here.

It will be available soon on popular podcast platforms, with additional information and engagement opportunities through the university’s website. Contact the Honors College for more information at honorscollege@wau.edu or 301-891-4065.
