Washington Adventist University Named Among “30 Great Small Colleges for a Counseling Degree”

Takoma Park, MD (March 3, 2015) Washington Adventist University is listed among the “30 Great Small Colleges for a Counseling Degree (Bachelor’s).” The listing appears in the March 2015 online “Best Psychology Degrees: Your Guide to Top Psychology Degree Programs” at http://www.bestpsychologydegrees.com/top/small-colleges-counseling-degree/. The listing was compiled by Kelley Jacobs, a Midwest business consultant and former program evaluator with experience in qualitative and quantitative research, survey development and statistical analysis.
“We are extremely pleased to be included in this listing, as it validates what we’ve long known – that Washington Adventist University is a great small college, and our counseling degree programs are outstanding,” said Cheryl Harris Kisunzu, Ph.D., MSN, FNP, RN, and Provost of Washington Adventist University.
In addition to the bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology, Washington Adventist University’s Department of Psychology also offers a master’s degree in counseling psychology. The university is currently one of only two schools in the state of Maryland that offers a master’s degree program for drug abuse counseling.
“I encourage anyone interested in a degree in counseling psychology to seek their education here at Washington Adventist University,” said Grant Leitma, Ph.D., and chair of the Washington Adventist University Department of Psychology. “All of our students receive an excellent education, and our graduate students have opportunities to gain first-hand experience helping people in the community through our Community Counseling Center.”
The Community Counseling Center is staffed by drug and alcohol counselors and graduate students who offer both private individual and group counseling. The center specializes in drug and alcohol addictions, behavioral addictions and mental health issues. Clients are charged on a sliding fee scale — based on what they can afford to pay — and the center also accepts all health insurance.

The university also offers both undergraduate and graduate counseling degree programs through its School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS) to accommodate working adults.
