Washington Adventist University (WAU) hosted convocation on Wednesday, October 16, providing students a break during a busy academic period and featuring guest speaker Pastor Rafael Soto, who encouraged attendees to embrace leadership and spiritual growth. The event also highlighted campus ministry programs, leadership opportunities, and upcoming events, including National Boss’s Day and Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.

In addition to promoting academic and professional opportunities, the convocation also focused on campus ministry activities. WAU’s Chaplain Jiwan Moon announced a series of mission trips scheduled for May, June, and July, urging students to sign up and prepare. He also mentioned that baptismal classes would be held every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those interested in learning more about Christ and being baptized.

During convocation there was a special recognition of National Boss’s Day, led by the Director for the Office of Human Resources, Lily Snider Gregory. “Your support and vision inspire us each day,” Snider Gregory said, acknowledging the hard work of WAU’s leadership.

To conclude the event, students were invited to stand and participate in a time of worship, which included singing and reflection. A special program in honor of the ending of Hispanic Heritage Month was also held, featuring guest speaker Pastor Rafael Soto, who serves as the Hispanic Ministries Director in the Potomac Conference.

Pastor Soto shared his journey and the importance of staying connected to one’s faith while overcoming the challenges of being an immigrant in the United States. “The key is to have a strong relationship with God,” said Soto.

During his address, Pastor Soto also encouraged students to take part in service opportunities and campus activities to enrich their university experience.

Soto also stressed the importance of mental health, urging students to utilize campus resources like counseling services and peer support programs to maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal well-being. Encouraging students to remain positive despite life’s difficulties and to lean on their faith for strength.

As WAU continues to provide spiritual and academic support, students were reminded of the importance of staying engaged, connected, and focused on their goals.
